Oh yes, Bill, I was wondering - and now you have expanded my knowledge
again. Years ago, when my old amplifier and connection played tricks on
me with this ungodly hum, I would have endured it with more grace had I
been able to identify it as white noise! Thanks for the info.

One other question... What does anyone else use to manage a network of Macs?
I can keep my powerbook and desktop up to date easily, but it is much harder
now that I am managing 5-6 more on a network at work. With all the system
patches and application updates, it is becoming unmanageable. Not all
Well I use Norton AV for the Mac:

But that's because it's provided free by the company's IS department,
not because I did any kind of careful market analysis to find the best
anti-virus package.
I'm afraid I don't know how it performs under
I use Timbuktu often, both on a LAN and from remote locations, to
access and control 7 or 8 Macs in my office. My remote access is
usually through cable or DSL connection, so speed generally is not an
issue. I'm very impressed with its features generally, although it does
occasionally flake
Rex sent out this message back in April, and I think it's important to
take note.
SoI'm asking again about virus protection software for the Mac.
Which ones are safe and effective to use with Panther?
I have Norton System Works, but I heard it could cause trouble. Is this
true?

It is usable, but frustrating. It seems especially slow when repositioning
open windows in the Finder. I too am on a 100bT network and have not tried
any broadband. I am tempted to try Apple's Remote desktop, but it appears to
only work over a LAN. That would be fine for now, but I may not want to

I read about TB2, but it appears you must have a FULL copy on each
machine This means I would have to invest $700-$800 to manage my small
network. I don't think I can justify that in our budget, since my shoe
leather is thought to be considerably cheaper! :-)

This is a followup to my earlier question about data recovery. The
situation now stands:
We purchased Data Rescue v10.4.1 and attempted to find files on the
hosed eMac hard drive. After letting it run for three days it told us
we still had some 17,000 minutes to go (which works out to roughly,

White noise - black hum?
In case you're wondering why the noise is called 'white': it is because
