I am at Salt Lake City, UT doing genealogy research and have encountered a
problem with a MS Excel file. I have my research plan set up in an Excel
document and have been able to open it up until this morning. Now I am
getting a message that it is a read only file or in a read only
Navigate to the file and select it. then press option key and the I Key
(or File--Get Info).
At the bottom of the Get Info window is a tab for Sharing Permissions.
Make sure it says (for your user name) Read Write. If it doesn't you
can change it..

Often when you get a message saying that a file is read-only, you can still
open it, but you can't save it back with the same name. If that's the case, go
ahead and open the file and use Save As ... to save it back with a new name.

not hooked up to a computer. It is one of those Western Digital portable
