Re: [MacGroup] Another recommendation needed: routers

2017-12-30 Thread Bill Rising

After a month of using my new router. I'm generally happy.

I have had to reboot the router once because I lost connections.

Still, range is good, so no extender is needed, so there are no longer any
problems with Facetime or phone calls dropping out when switching router to
extender.

All Good.

OK... I decided to go with Lee's suggestion because

He has had a good experience
It got good reviews when it first came out
It has 3 bands instead of 2
  I don't think I need a wave 2 (MU-MIMO) router quite yet
The router has been on the market for a while without complaints about major
meltdowns (unlike the Netgear 7000P)
My house isn't really big enough to warrant a mesh router
Just to be sure about the last one, I played with (limited) changes to
locations of my current router and found that moving it just 5 feet improved
its range.

I haven't picked up the router yet, but I'll get it today and set it up...
we'll see how it works.

Thanks,

Bill

Ed,

Way back when trying to get better range with an Airport Extreme I was going to
hook Airport Expresses as a booster…

I talked to an Apple Engineer he said it would sure work…BUT….it would slow the
entire system since the packets going to and from the base station it was going
to cause double the load and would slow the entire network speed but I would
have greater range.

Has that problem been solved?

Do you get the same speed with the extenders as you do without?

Thanks bunches.

John

I bought a Netgear Nighthawk R8000 last May. It works well and hasn’t yet died.
Seven months. Is it working on borrowed time?

I have it in a coat closet smack dab in the middle of the house and there’s a
good WiFi signal everywhere in the house and even way out into the yard.

[MacGroup] Another recommendation needed: routers

2017-11-24 Thread Bill Rising
Hi all,

I'm thinking of upgrading my router. The main reason for this is that the (old)
Airport Extreme doesn't have the greatest range, and I was hoping that a
directed beam ac router would work better.

Here are the things which are important:
Simultaneous dual (or better) band (which is now old hat)
  range
  ac

QoS is less important, as are all the fancy things that allow simultaneous
gaming and streaming.

I was thinking about a Netgear Nighthawk R7000P router (currently ~$150). The
reviews are good, especially mentioning quick speeds at long range, but many
buyer reviews say that the router has a habit of dying after 6 months.

The network guy at my work favors the ASUS RT-AC68U router.\

Does anyone have any recommendations for recent routers?
