[MacGroup] Junk Mail

2014-07-05 Thread Anne Cartwright
I'm using Apple's Mail 6.6 on a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 running Mac OS X 10.8.5.

My problem is with junk mail. I recently stopped using Win.net's junk mail
filtering service. It went bonkers for a few days and was filtering out just
about everything including replies to my messages. Going through Win.net's junk
filtering looking for important messages is SO SLOW that I decided it was a
lot faster and easier to simply use Mail. Just hope I can improve it a bit.

In Mail's PreferencesJunk Mail I have the following checked:

Enable junk mail filtering

Move it to the junk mailbox

exempt:
Sender of message is in my Contacts
Sender of message is in my Previous Recipients
Message is addressed using my full name

Also: Trust junk mail headers in messages

The junk mail filter doesn't seem to be filtering out much. Is there something
else I should be doing? I vaugely remember something about training the junk
mail filter. Does that process still exist?

Thanks for any help.

When you first start using the junk mail filter, it doesn't catch anything.
When you read mail, you should be identifying stuff you consider to be junk by
flagging it with the menu item 'MessageMarkAs Junk Mail'. When you do this,
the email is moved to the Junk mailbox and the filter is taught about what you
consider to be junk mail. Over a few weeks, it will slowly get better about
automatically flagging junk.

This is true, but even with assiduous training Mail does not do a very good job
of filtering out junk email if you really get bombarded with it, as I do. I
highly recommend SpamSieve for more robust filtering.

OK. That's what I'm doing; I guess Mil just needs more time.

Thanks.

MacGroup: Junk Mail delete question

2005-03-18 Thread Dan Crutcher
I have got Mail's junk mail auto delete working now and thought I'd
pass along my findings in case anyone else might benefit from my
travails.

It appears that, as some who responded here noted, the auto deletion
does occur only if the program (or maybe the computer) is shut down. I
haven't figured out exactly when it happens, but I do notice that if I
leave the computer on, with Mail active, for several days nothing gets
deleted.

If the Move deleted messages to separate folder is selected in the
Accounts/Special Mailboxes preference tab the junk mail does not get
deleted, even if the computer is shut down and restarted. So deselect
that option if you have previously selected it.

The junk mail that gets automatically deleted is, for reasons I haven't
figured out, more than exactly one day old (or one week or however
you've set it). For example, although I have mine set to delete junk
mail that is more than one day old, this morning (March 18), after
turning off my computer at about 5 p.m. on March 17 and turning it back
on at about 8:30 a.m. on the 18th, I still have mail in my junk mailbox
dating back to 5:30 a.m. on March 15.

But at least it's working more or less like it should.

MacGroup: Junk Mail delete question

2005-03-10 Thread Marta Edie
thanks, Bill, for reminding me that there is a preference mailbox in
the accounts fort the different accounts. I see now moore clearly why I
have these different sub trash cans. Had forgotten all about it. Always
looked at preferences in mail from the menu bar.

A question in the same vein. When I press 'delete'in an email message
from the inbox. it automatically goes into trash, either into my
mac.com, or insight.com or on my mac trash bin( albeit in the same
trash can). Is this the normal way - from in to trash via delete?
then if I want to delete my trash I can do so from the trash box
proper. All my other extra mailboxes will delete directly when I
press delete. Is this a safety measure ? I can, however, delete
directly from the inbox by pressing cut from my menu bar, then the
mail diappears immediately, never to be seen again. Is this the way
it works by default? I don't remember ever having set the inbox to
delete into trash first before I can delete it permanantly from the
 trash can.

It could depend on what you have checked for your Trash for that
particular account. Click on the Special Mailboxes tab under the
Accounts button for the Preferences in Mail.
