External Drives, CDs, and DVD problems

I *think* this started after upgrading to the newest Mavericks, but not sure. Whenever I put in a CD, or a DVD, or whenever I plug in one of my four thumb drives or the one external hard drive, I have to manually go into Disc Utility and tell it to mount. Does anyone know what I need to rest

I guess that eliminates my first hunch. Finder Preferneces General then check off Show these items on the desktop. I was guessing these might have been turned off and that things actually were mounting, just not showing on the desktop. Also, in disk utility, for any drive that isn't your
