I *think* this started after upgrading to the newest Mavericks, but not sure.
Whenever I put in a CD, or a DVD, or whenever I plug in one of my four thumb
drives or the one external hard drive, I have to manually go into Disc Utility
and tell it to mount.
Does anyone know what I need to rest

Because it shows up in Disc Utility, but not anywhere else. The Mount button is
not greyed out. When I mount it by pressing that button, it pops up on the
desktop and anywhere else I have it set to show external drives and discs.

I guess that eliminates my first hunch. Finder Preferneces General
then check off Show these items on the desktop. I was guessing these
might have been turned off and that things actually were mounting, just
not showing on the desktop. Also, in disk utility, for any drive that

Sounds like weirdness. Have you tried the usual things like rebooting
and repairing permissions?
