I think this started with IOS 11, no way that I know of to get rid of it.

There is the possibility of using edit mode to select multiple conversations
and then delete. That at least adds some flexibility. I think it is a
conspiracy to make us use more memory and therefore buy bigger phones (just
joking). I believe there is also a way to have conversations timeout and
Tim is correct. Once a message, or conversation, is deleted, because it is
encrypted, there are no backups or delete folders. So, once deleted, there is
no possibility of recovering the message or conversation.

It's just not possible. With Messages in the Cloud and such, the
"confirmation" question is considered necessary.

some point, not with iOS 12 however. I would like to stop this
