In my experience, the VO + CMD + Shift + Spacebar, Mouse Down command, may work
in some situations where the VO + Shift + Spacebar command does not. Of
course, this requires that the command be performed a second time to release
the Mouse Down action.
May be worth a try.

Hi,
VO-shit-space performs a virtual click. Although, it sometimes does not accept
that action as the actual physical mouse-click. Most often it does, but I’ve
seen it where the physical click is required.

Hi. Once you've put the slider to the power setting you want, you have to click
the mouse/trackpad to make the changes stick.

I am trying to help two people, one has a 2020 intel Mac-book Air and another
person with a 2020 M1 Mac-book Pro.
They are both trying to adjust the display settings on they're Macs to turn off
after three hours. I had them both go into the battery in system preferences
and go to power adapter.
