Instead of going to Notifications, try the following instead:
Go to System Preferences > Software Update.
Here you can either check for updates, or download and install an update i
The keyboard shortcut to get to notifications is VO-O (the second letter in
notification).
You do need to use VO-command-space to perform most actions on a notification.
Though I did send out a note last week describing how to change this keystroke
to right-option-A.
