I was never in the settings that I know of. At least, not consciously. If I did
this, is there a way I can undo it?

For some reason, I can't navigate in the dock and I am not sure how to fix it.
I can get *to* the dock, but I can't seem to remove items from the dock. I'm
not sure how to do this.

Hi Jane,
to remove items from the Dock press CTRL + Option + Shift + M to open the
context menue of a certain item. There you'll find Options with a sub menue.
Open that and choose remove from the dock. Then it should be removed.
To move from item to item just use the left and right arrow
