When you save a document, you have the opportunity to specify where on the Mac it should be saved i.e., in what folder. If you don't remember what folder it was set to you Can open up TextEdit, type something in and then save that document. Now look to see what folder the this text will be

Not infrequently, I have noticed documents are saved in icloud by default. If you haven't saved many more documents after the one you are looking for, open TextEdit, go to file menu and down arrow to open recent. Expand the menu with right arrow key and you may find the title of your document
