Hi everyone,
I'm trying to figure out how to eject an sd card from my imac so I don't get
the error that the disc was ejected improperly.
I press the eject key on the keyboard, but apparently I have to do more than
that.
How can I properly eject a card or drive?

I use VO + Shift and M when on the drive and arrow down to eject.
I am sure there is a better way but I don't know it.

You can use all of the methods suggested, including your own, as long as the SD
card is selected. So, either select it in the Sidebar or on the Desktop
depending on your Finder Preferences, then cmd-e, VO-shift-m then choose Eject,
or press the Eject button as you did.
