Just found that I cannot highlight someone's e-mail address and thus send a
private reply under Lion. At least, not using the method we all used to use.
Is there some other way I might be overlooking?

Interact with the header, find the e-mail address, VO shift M and cursor down
until you find the desired thing and press enter.

I did exactly that. While focused on a message, (I was interacting with the
text area), I stopped interacting with the text and then VO+up arrow to the
header group. I interacted with the header group and found the from field. I
found, however, that I could not highlight the sender and that

Yep, found solution. Turns out I was attempting to highlight the from field
using command+right arrow as I had done in SL. This time, I used VO+shift+a.
