find the zip file on the Mac, vo-shift-m, open the Share menu, and choose
Airdrop.
As to supported Macs, Google has tons of lists that will tell you if your

every time the computer power is turned on, you need to login via File Vault
because the encryption key for the disk must be opened.

Deirdre, there's absolutely no need to upgrade to Yosemite yet. I'm using
Mavericks and intend to stay with it for a while at least until Yosemite is
upgraded and some of the bugs are ironed out. Again, don't bother worrying
about upgrading from Mavericks yet.
