Focus Blue 5th on the Mac

2018-09-23 Thread 'E.T.' via MacVisionaries
Has anyone been successful in updating this display in a Windows 7
VM on the Mac? I need to install a driver which is not working. A USB
connection is required and VMware Fusion sees the connected display but
Windows does not due to lack of driver.

I should have my watch in my hands tomorrow. Excited about it, one of the only
apple things I can be excited about anyways.
Mark I remember that phone loved it. I prefer bigger devices myself, and I want
them to feel big. My mom was kind of upset when she noticed that her x max was
pretty much the same size as her 8plus she had. I use to have a note myself and
loved the fact that it took up a fair bit of space. Putting your phone in your
back pocket um that's not me.
My phone is normally in my front pocket or in a clip. I can't ever recall
putting my phone in my back pocket.

 Hello Everyone,

Let me just say that the following is just my opinion and it is not

Yesterday, I went to a remote Best Buy retail store where, as I
expected, there were almost no customers.

The Apple section was completely deserted except for one very
 enthusiastic Apple representative.

Although I had not fully recognized it myself, some part of me
really wanted to be wowed by the 10 S Max in terms of its 6.5 inch
display size. As you may recall, I have often stated that I am not
ready for Face ID yet, I discovered that I was somewhat open to
purchasing a 10 S Max if it could wow me, enough.

Five years or so ago, I had a friend who owned one of the first
modern phablets, the Samsun Mega. I believe the screen size was
6.3 inches. Its physical size was so large that every time I used
it, I felt as though I was a little kid playing with a grown-up's device.
I just couldn't stop grinning, every time I held it in my hand.

It was huge Yet, despite its size, I really, really liked it.
It felt, just as the term phablet implies, like a cross between a
 phone and a tablet computer.

Believe it or not, I found myself finding ways to spend more time
with my friend just so I could play with that Samsung Mega.
 (smile)

I almost bought one for myself but, at that time, I just didn't
like Android enough to make the investment. Soon after, Samsung
 stopped making the Mega.

So, yesterday, as I entered the Apple section of the store, I
suppose, on some subconscious level, I was hoping to see that same
huge form-factor on the 10 S Max. It didn't happen. In fact,
believe it or not, the actual body, or form-factor of the 10 S Max
is almost identical to my 8 Plus.

I was so disappointed. I was so disappointed, in fact, that the

Yes this can bevery hard to find. open an apps preferences and find the siri
search and shortcuts button. in that pane there is a button for shortcuts. In
mail your last serch and composition are listed & you can add a voice command
to any of these.

Another Great Face ID Failure Story, I Can't Get Enough of Them, (Smile)

2018-09-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

As you may know, I am not yet sold on the reliability of Face ID.

A sighted friend of mine, a big, big big fan of Face ID is always telling me
how much he loves Face ID and how well it works for him; to which I always
reply, "Good for you."

Well, he recently purchased the 10 S Max along with a new garage door opener
which is supposed to be activated via Face ID, when he approaches his home.

Last night, he called me at approximately 11:30pm. Since it was so late, I
feared that he had some kind of family emergency but no; he called
complaining that he could not get into his garage using his iPhone because
Face ID would not recognize him in the dark, in his motorcycle helmet as his
bike approached. He said, to his dismay, even when he took his helmet off,
the phone would not recognize him in the dark.

I could not stop laughing. I don't know why he called me as we have not
spoken in quite some time but I suspect that he just wanted to vent to
someone who would care either one way or the other.

What made me laugh even harder was the fact that he had been so confident in
Face ID on the new phone that he decided not to purchase a remote control
for the garage door system.

He was so angry at Face ID and the phone that he could not let it go.
(smile)

He sent me a text, today, telling me that he purchased a remote control for
the opener.

Just another great Face ID failure story, I can't get enough of them, (Big
Smile).

Mark

RE: Mojavi

2018-09-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Lorie,

Mac OS Mojave is schedule for public release tomorrow, Monday, September 24,
2018.

As far as I am concerned, Mojave will be a stunning success, as far as
VoiceOver accessibility is concerned.

Of course, this is just my opinion.

As always, be certain to make a backup of your current OS, before updating.

Mark

Re: Just press record Siri shortcut

2018-09-23 Thread Mary Otten

Sent no, not off track at all. The developers of some apps have implemented
certain shortcuts. Just press record is one such app, as our apps like Mail and
voice dream reader. So the Shortcuts app is one thing, allowing you to make
your own shortcuts. But app developers can make shortcuts which you can then
simply add to your personal collection of short cuts by recording it phrase
that you will use to let Siri know you want to invoke that shortcut. No
shortcut app is necessary in such cases.

Go to Webinar

2018-09-23 Thread Lorie McCloud
does anybody know if goto webinar is accessible on the Mac? I tried to use it
today, pressed the link for the launcher and Safari opened but nothing
happened. I know it used to be accessible but I've been away from it for some
time using Zoom which I really like. anyway, I'd like to know if there's
something I don't get, something I was supposed to do or if it stopped being
accessible.

Is There An iOS 12 VoiceOver Screen Refreshing Problem?

2018-09-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Does the VoiceOver gesture of 3-finger swipe down from top to bottom no
longer work? In iOS 11, this gesture would cause the screen to refresh and
VoiceOver would announce this by saying something like, "refreshing app."
Now, try as I may, I cannot get this gesture to refresh anything on any app.

Also, single-finger double-tapping the status line, located at the top of
the display, no longer consistently scrolls the display back to the top.
Sometimes it does, and sometimes, it does not.

Since updating to iOS 12, I have noticed that there appears to be some kind
of screen refreshing problem when using certain app such as Over Drive. For
example, in situations where additional data is supposed to be automatically
updated to match what is currently selected, nothing happens. In order to
get the additional data, I now have to manually activate some kind of
control on the page in order to get the page to update/refresh with the
additional data. In the case of Over Drive, recommended books based on the
current title in focus.

I have kind of noticed this behavior in certain aspects of the Twitter app
and also, I think, in one of my banking apps but I'm not certain as I have
only now begun paying attention to this issue.

Before I send a bug report to Apple, I want to confirm any or part of the
observations described above.

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

There is the free open source skim pdf app., I prefer it to preview and it is
faster and smaller.

It is designed for academic literature and might handle tables etc. better. It
seems to me to render text formats with fewer quirks.

Using cmd + a to choose all text, then cmd + c to copy it to the clipboard,
then the entire text cann be pasted into a plain text file for

Apple should have included a USB-C cable with the new iPhone, Business Insider

2018-09-23 Thread M. Taylor
Apple's big bet on the future of USB is increasingly looking like a rare
misfire
By Matt Weinberger

Starting in 2016, the MacBook Pro ditched separate charging and display
ports, and whittled everything down to two USB-C ports. Apple

. Apple's newest MacBook Pro laptops got rid of the separate ports for
charging and accessories, and instead whittled it down to two USB-C ports.
. USB-C is hyped as the replacement for regular-old USB, also known as
USB Type-A. It can handle charging, plugging in external monitors, and any
and all other kinds of accessories from a single cable. It's neat!
. But also, it means that you have to buy pricey, annoying dongles if
you want to plug in any of the existing flash drives, mice, keyboard, or
other gadgetry you already own. It's frustrating!
. Ultimately, it's hard to take Apple's big bet on USB-C seriously
when not even its own iPhones come with a USB-C cable. That's right: You
can't connect a new iPhone to a MacBook or MacBook Pro without shelling out
for a new cable or adapter.
. It's an annoying oversight from a company that's known for nailing
the details.
A few months ago, our I.T. department sent me a mid-2017 model MacBook Pro
to replace my fast-aging MacBook Air.
To catch you up, Apple gave its premium, top-shelf MacBook Pro lineup a
controversial new design starting in 2016. Its keyboard was flimsy and prone
to breaking (hasn't happened to me yet, and largely fixed by a new model in
2018); some versions sported a strange Touch Bar above the keyboard (mine
doesn't have one); and, worst of all, it replaced the traditional USB ports
with the new, cutting-edge USB-C (the bane of my existence).
Yes, it's the last one that really gets under my skin. Starting with the
2016 MacBook Pro, Apple took out the charging port, the mini-HDMI port, and
indeed everything but a headphone jack, and replaced it with nothing more
than two USB-C ports. It could be worse, though: The regular MacBook only
gets a single USB-C port.
It's easy to see where Apple was going with this move. USB-C offers many
benefits over regular USB (which, by the way, is officially called USB-A) -
it means that the same cable can be used for charging, for plugging in a
monitor, or attaching any number of other accessories. And it sidesteps the
most annoying thing about USB: The connector plugs in no matter which side
is facing up. It's elegant in a way that feels very Apple-y, for lack of a
better term.
It also means that any USB-C charger can work with any USB-C gadget. When
I'm traveling, I don't need to pack a separate charger for my Nintendo
Switch - my MacBook Pro charger will power it up just fine. (I mean, I pack
a separate Switch charger anyway, but that's because I'm neurotic, not
because I have to.) If you have a phone or tablet that charges via USB-C,
like a Google Pixel 2 or Microsoft Surface Go, you'd be able to charge it
from there, too.
This is the gear you would neat to give your iPhone the fastest possible
charge. The cable on the right connects USB-C to Lightning - the kind of
cable you'd need to connect an iPhone to the newest MacBook Pro line. Apple
It's not unusual for Apple to get out ahead of the curve on new standards
like this. The original iMac caught a ton of flack in the '90s for not
including a floppy disk drive, but that turned out to be the right move, as
the rise of the internet, re-writable CDs, and USB flash drives combined to
make them quickly obsolete.
This time, though, Apple may have outsmarted itself. Because while a handful
of gadget-makers, like Google and Nintendo, have pushed boldly into the
USB-C future, the rest of the world still runs on good ol' reliable USB-A.
If you want to plug in your existing mouse and keyboard into the MacBook
Pro, you still need some kind of adapter, hub, or dongle. It's what
gadget-heads have dubbed "dongle hell," as plugging in everyday accessories
becomes a headache.
Indeed, the largest sign that USB-C just isn't quite ready for prime-time
comes from Apple itself.
Apple's newest phones, the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, do not include a
USB-C cable, or a fast-charging power adapter with which to use one. That
means if you buy Apple's most expensive new iPhone, which starts at $1,000,
you can't use it with Apple's most expensive MacBook Pro without buying a
new cable, or at least, an annoying dongle. All told, an Apple-branded USB-C
cable, and a fast-charging wall plug to go with it, will run you another
$70.
It's not the end of the world; I have to imagine that most iPhone owners
charge from the wall anyway, or at least own a computer that still has an
original-recipe USB port.
Still, it's a surprising oversight from Apple, which loves to boast about
how well the iPhone and Mac work together. Software like iMessage and Photos
works seamlessly across phone and computer, but a single cable, not in the
box, makes it

2018-09-23 Thread Cameron Strife
Hi. the odd thing is that in windows ten on my bootcamp partition,
it's working fine. It's just not showing up in audio midi setup on the
Mac OS partition at all although I see all the components listed in
system profiler... Logic pro x doesn't see it as an available device
either of course.

I should have my watch in my hands tomorrow. Excited about it, one of
the only apple things I can be excited about anyways.
Mark I remember that phone loved it. I prefer bigger devices myself,
and I want them to feel big. My mom was kind of upset when she noticed
that her x max was pretty much the same size as her 8plus she had. I
use to have a note myself and loved the fact that it took up a fair
bit of space. Putting your phone in your back pocket um that's not me.
My phone is normally in my front pocket or in a clip. I can't ever
recall putting my phone in my back pocket.

handbrake Question

2018-09-23 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

Can handbrake be used to import commercial DVDs into iTunes? My husband and I
own a few TV series on blue ray. I'd be interested in storing them digitally,
and watching them via Apple TV rather than fussing with the DVD. One series in
particular is not available on iTunes, so it seems like the only way to
accomplish this would be to import our DVDs, hopefully into iTunes. We
legitimately purchased the series in question, so I'm not trying to violate
copyright or anything. Can Handbrake be used for this?
Thanks,
Donna

way off track, you need to get the shortcuts app and make a shortcut
which can record.

Re: Mark on iPhone 10 S Max and iWatch Series 4, Form-Factor

2018-09-23 Thread Angie Nutt
I wonder if there’ll be a smaller phone coming out early next year.

On Friday I was comparing the se with 6s as I wanted to make sure of some facts
before selling my 6s, and I discovered the se came out in March of the
following year.

All the best

weired issues with watch os 5

2018-09-23 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi listers,

So last week when I updated to watch OS 5 on my series 2 watch
I was having issues with some of the complications not giving the names within
the watch faces.

The main complicaitons were just press record and HR monitor

Well just to see what happened I resetup my watch from scratch although chose
the reinstall from back up option during the very nice setup process.

And now I have everything showing correctly on my watch.

I have to admit though that OS5 still isn't overly quick on the s2 device,

RE: Mark on iPhone 10 S Max and iWatch Series 4, Form-Factor

2018-09-23 Thread Simon Fogarty
Yeah Mark I was trying to get my hands on one today to have a look at but no
retail store in my city has a demo version yet and none of them have real
devices out for the public to view.

Also with the 749 NZ dollar price, I might wait 6 months and see what happens
incase they bring the LTE model out here in NZ,
Currently there is no word but they didn't have the series 3 model NZ mobile
providers don’t' want to have these second devices for some reason.

Donna,

You are going to absolutely adore your series 4. Other than its size, I was
amazed at how much faster it appeared to function, in the short time that I
played with it, than even the Series 2.

And here's another take on the Apple Watch. I'm eagerly awaiting my Series 4.
But I'm still sporting a Series 1, and it's so slow as to almost be more of a
hinderance than a help. So, for me the display size had nothing to do with the
purchase decision. I want the power and speed, which I'm sure will be a big
improvement over my series 1. I did think about saving some money and getting
a series 3, but I figured it would just become slow that much faster, so
decided to spend the money for the 4.
Cheers,
Donna

RE: Mark on iPhone 10 S Max and iWatch Series 4, Form-Factor

2018-09-23 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Mark,

Yeah I have had a plus sized phone before, it ws the 7+.

I'm total so didn't get the increased resolution screen size,
But it was a good size for the keyboard and my big fingers

However I'm now use to the X and found it more difficult to type on the XS Max,

But a real reason for me to not update is the pricing of the devices here in NZ,
The XS 256 GB device is 2200 nZ dollars
The prices just go up majorily from there.

Hello Simon,

You make an excellent point.

You know, I do like to watch old episodes of the Twilight Zone and Star Trek on
my 8 Plus. I can enjoy the video easily enough, most of the time. Yesterday,
I had the sales person play a few videos and, no doubt because of my poor
vision, I did not really notice an increase in frame size. Doubtless a sighted
person would definitely notice the increase in display quality but to me, it
was undetectable. The display would have to be much larger in order for me to
find it easier to see.

Mark

I thought the same way until I actually got to look at the new devices
yesterday and all I can say is that they are simply the same feel to that of
the likes of the 7 and 7+.

They really or at least to me don't feel that large, But yet the increased
screen size isn't something we the blind can use due to it being more of a
visual increase rather than a physical increase.
The edge to edge would be great if you were watching videos etc

As you said, Mark, that was your opinion. I can’t imagine what that big phone
looked like. I know I wouldn’t want one. The thing about these phones is there
so much better design. You don’t need a honking big thing to get a nice large
display these days. I think that is to be cheered not lamented. How did your
friend Carrie that monster? Surely, it did not fit into a pocket. My regret is
that Apple has apparently abandoned the people who like a smaller form factor.
Enough is enough already. Just my opinion. Smile.
