Re: File vault on macs with youch bars.

2018-11-06 Thread Jessica Moss
I finally got it working; I’m not sure what happened, but it was apparently
trying to either install or reinstall Mac OS, and couldn’t, so I called Apple,
and they helped me perform the command that forced it to restart from the hard
drive, and now it’s working again.

Re: More Volume, Please

2018-11-06 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
That did it, Anders. Thanks!

After resetting SMC, VO volume was still showing 100%, but system volume
was now only 75%.

Now, if I can find a EFI fix to boot my Linux USB, I'll be fully
functional again!

Thanks again for the assist with volume.

Re: Mac-Mini with wireless keyboard?

2018-11-06 Thread Steve Matzura
Firstly, keyboards are Bluetooth devices. Anything with an Internet
protocol (IP) address is Wi-fi; all  else are Bluetooth, or a variant
such as Airplay.

Secondly, your keyboard will  work fine, with or without an FN key,
except that you'll have to remember that the Command and Option keys are
transposed--Command will be the Windows key, and Option will be the Alt
key. I'm not sure what the Application key does, if anything, in Mac OS.
Either way, you'll find all of this out when you pair the keyboard with
your Mini.

Third and finally, the FN key in question is used to switch between
media control keys and standard function keys. There is a setting in
MacOS Preferences to set this behavior. Some people prefer their
function keys to do things like make the screen brighter and dimmer,
control media playback, etc., and rarely use the F-keys for anything
else. They need to use the FN key to get the standard F-key
functionality back. Most visually impaired users, on the other hand,
prefer things the other way, requiring the press of the FN key to use
the media and screen control functions since we don't use those much.

Hi folks, subject says it all.

I've got a USB wireless, not Bluetooth Logitech full size keyboard,

I was listening to a podcast, and It was talking about if you can't
start up voiceover with  command F5, you can hit the FN/ Function key.

This wireless keyboard doesn't have that key, at least I think it
doesn't.

This keyboard is being used with windows now.

The keyboard also came with a wireless mouse, witch I never used.

So just wondering how I'd get VO started if the keyboard doesn't have
said Function key?

Good thought, Tim, and I had forgotten to check that.

Unfortunately, both VO Volume and system volume are showing 100%

Re: File vault on macs with youch bars.

2018-11-06 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Simon,

You're probably right. When I had my 2011 souped up MBP, VO did not work at
the File Vault screen, it just beeped. When I got this new one with High
Sierra, I guess that I didn't check the VO settings in Users & Groups very
carefully, and made an incorrect assumption. Thanks for enlightening me.

Simon,

In Mojave, you are correct. It didn't work for me on older iterations of the
MacOS, but that may have just been on an older MacBook Pro as well. Because it
didn't on my old 2011 MBP, I didn't even realize that it may have worked on my
new 2017 model, so I can't confirm how it worked in High Sierra. Anyway, in
Mojave, in the Login Options area of the Users & Groups System Preference pane,
there is now a button named "Accessibility Options". Press on this and check
which accessibility option you'd like at the login screen and it works both at
the regular Login screen and at the File Vault version of the login screen.
One more thing to mention, I said that you needed your account name at the File
Vault login prompt, but that is inaccurate now as well. You could enter either
the Full Name or the Account Name and it will be accepted.

Mac-Mini with wireless keyboard?

2018-11-06 Thread Matt

Hi folks, subject says it all.

I've got a USB wireless, not Bluetooth Logitech full size keyboard, with
a number pad, it even has media keys as well.

I was listening to a podcast, and It was talking about if you can't
start up voiceover with  command F5, you can hit the FN/ Function key.

This wireless keyboard doesn't have that key, at least I think it doesn't.

This keyboard is being used with windows now.

The keyboard also came with a wireless mouse, witch I never used.

So just wondering how I'd get VO started if the keyboard doesn't have
said Function key?
