2021-04-26 Thread M. Taylor
Your iPhone apps are tracking you. iOS 14.5 lets you turn that off. Here's
how

It takes under a minute to change a setting that will boost your privacy and
keep ads from following you across the internet. Here's how to do it.

With iOS 14.5, you can stop apps from tracking you across the internet, so
you should see fewer ads following you.

If you've spent any time shopping online, you're probably familiar with the
creepy feeling that arises when you click on a pair of shoes, and find that
an ad for that very pair follows you on every site and app you visit for the
next week. A new feature coming to iPhones ($900 at Boost Mobile) in iOS
14.5 aims to keep your online life more private by giving you the option to
turn off ad tracking within the apps you use.

The App Tracking Transparency feature arrived with iOS 14.5 on Monday.
Unless you give explicit permission to an app (including those made by
Apple), it can't use your data for targeted ads, share your location data
with advertisers or share your advertising ID or any other identifiers with
third parties. This change -- first unveiled at Apple's Worldwide Developers
Conference in June 2020 -- has drawn support from privacy advocates, and
criticism from companies like Facebook, who say it will hurt its ad
business.

The move comes alongside other efforts from Apple to increase transparency
and privacy, which CEO Tim Cook recently called a "fundamental human right":
In December, with the release of iOS 14.3, users began seeing app "nutrition
labels" that inform you of the data an app requests before you download it
from the App Store.

Here's how to use the new App Tracking Transparency feature to control which
apps are able to track you.

How to opt out of app tracking on new apps
When you download and open a new app, you'll get a notification that asks if
you want to let the app track your activity across other companies' apps and
websites. You'll also see information about what the app would track. You
can tap either Ask App not to Track or Allow.

You can also opt out of app tracking across every app you download by going
to Settings > Privacy > Tracking, and toggling off Allow Apps to Request to
Track. This means any app that tries to ask for your permission will be
blocked from asking, and automatically informed that you have requested not
to be tracked. And all apps (other than those you've given permission to
track in the past) will be blocked from accessing your device's information
used for advertising, according to Apple.

It's important to note that this doesn't mean ads will disappear. It just
means that you'll be more likely to see generic ads, not one for that same
pair of shoes you clicked on one time.

How to opt out of app tracking on your already-downloaded apps
For apps that you've already downloaded and may have tracking permissions
set up for, you can still turn those permissions on or off on a per-app
basis.

Under Settings, tap an app, and then tap to turn off Allow Tracking. Or, go
to Settings > Privacy > Tracking, and tap to turn on or off each app you'll
see in the list of apps that have requested permission to track your
activity.

All app developers are required to ask for permission for tracking. If Apple
learns a developer is tracking users who asked not to be tracked, they will
need to either update their app, or else potentially face rejection from the
app store.

Apple believes that privacy features like these are a differentiator for
their products. Cook has said that because the company's business model
isn't built on selling ads, it can focus on privacy.

Re: Smart locks that work with HomeKit?

2021-04-26 Thread Jeff Berwick
When I read the subject, I was prepared to recommend the August Smart Lock. I
have this and have never had any issues with it.

I was a bit confused by the installation process, but once I had it installed
it made sense to me. It was pretty easy.

My August lock is probably three or four years old, so perhaps they have
changed the hardware/software?

I know they have a new smaller version—which I am looking forward to getting at
some point to replace my older larger model.

layout pane for braille on mac

2021-04-26 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi,

Just thought I’d update you all on my braille layout pane problem..

For a time now, the layout pane in the braille section of the vo utility was
not showing up. I’d click on the layout tab and nothing would happen. The
type of display was showing up, though, and I could pick things like the
braille table, etc, with no problems.

So today I just tried clicking on the display tab and the layout pane appeared,
and I was able to assign new commands to my display! Not sure why this has
happened to my mac and display, but the layout and display panes seem to be
switched around or something. I have tried this with the display in bluetooth
mode(my preferred mode), and as a usb device and the same things happen.

It really doesn’t matter to me about this as I figured out how to get each tab
to appear and me able to modify settings if needs be..

Re: Best bookkeeping software for VoiceOver?

2021-04-26 Thread Brad Snyder
“Best” is a very subjective term.
I suggest you check out FreshBooks.com. It is a web-based subscription
accounting/invoicing service that is accessible using VoiceOver on both iOS and
Mac. It has been a while since I’ve used the service, but if I remember
correctly, I think there is an iOS app that works very nicely.

Re: mac os big sur + mbp 16 2020: feel totally ripped off by the touch bar

2021-04-26 Thread 'Mervin Keck III' via MacVisionaries
I appreciate your wisdom and experience when it comes to the Mac. I bought my
Mac in hopes of transitioning away from Windows once and for all. I once had
vision and was more than a casual PC user. However, the last few years I have
struggled with being productive on Windows 7 and `10. I am hoping to become
productive once again on the Mac and become more than a casual user once again.

I have no knowledge of scripting or any of the advanced functions of my Mac.
But I intend to learn. I also wish to get back into audio production which I
did many years ago when I had vision.

I’m far from close minded. If I find that the Touch Bar is a deterrent to
productivity I will trade my MacBook Pro 13 in on a newer model without a Touch
Bar when Apple makes one. From what I hear they eventually will.

Thanks for your explanation.

yes, Docu Scan Plus ist really the best solution. I like it very much.

What‘s also quite good is Exact Scan Pro. I‘m not sure whether you have it in

alternative. But last time I used it it didn‘t support layout detection. Means
it didn‘t recognized whether the page was upside down.

All the best

If you’re talking Mac OS, then the best OCR is likely the most expensive —
Docuscan +. Scanners themselves will vary, but you should get one with both ADF
and a flatbed for books.

I use tesseract from the CLI for OCR.
For a scanner I use an Epson Perfection 1640SU I’ve had for 20 years. It works

Re: mac os big sur + mbp 16 2020: feel totally ripped off by the touch bar

2021-04-26 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Yuma,

I agree with you. I’ve learned to live with the touch bar, but after four
years, I still am not a fan. I’m about to buy one of the new Macs, and I’ve
decided to get a MacBook Air precisely because I want function keys and not a
touch bar.
Cheers,

Unfortunately the Apple rep did not give you correct information but what’s new
from a sales person yes you can run when dusters the carryall do you have to
run it in a virtual machine however two of the manufactures of virtual machine
software are offering better products for bras to at home users so long as
they’re not using it for a job. What you do is you download VMware and I can’t
remember the other company that does any virtual machine install windows
install a window screen reader and everything new lock and windows and you are
done that’s what I do. And I will chrome I have a 2020 MacBook Pro 13 inch what
I was running the windows in virtually because when I’m not using my cell phone
as I’m doing right now or dictation I must use windows because that’s the only
operating system the dragon supports at this time. So I have a lot of window
stuff. But I need some ass. And I have no extreme problems to report. I hope
this helps.

Disclaimer number one there text written above of course as I’ve been
discussing has been dictated to the phone via dictation software. There may be
errors in the above text if there are at least you not being able to understand
something please reach out to me and asked me what my original intent was. I
hope to assist you in clearing up any misunderstandings you may have based on
that above text.

Please also note that the above comments and door positions etc. online mine.
They do not reflect the views of the national Federation of the blind, or in

for reading rest.

PS the virtual machine software as I mentioned above is being offered with no
charge by two of the companies. VMware and the other company that I can’t
remember the name of at the present time. And it varies with being where my
I’ve had no real problems with either Josh or NVDA. Also please be aware that
the jobs that you run must be paid to your license and yes you can authorize it
and the really really copy of John’s on there with the activation key
exceptional no issues. Also be aware that you will have to licensure your copy
of windows. I’m so long as windows exists on that machine even virtually you
shouldn’t have any problems. I hope that this long winded response to your
message just helpful to you and anyone else who wants some sales meeting to do
this.

My MacBook Pro is very fast. I can’t recall the specs off the top off the top
of my head but I am very impressed with the M1 speed and I would not hesitate
to buy it again if I had a do over.
I have a 16 GB, 1 TB model and I also have a Lenovo with the same windows 10
setup. My Mac is so much faster I am sometimes shocked at the difference.
Even if I had the desire to run a Virtual Machine on my Mac I would not. I
specifically bought this machine to get away from third party screen readers
and learn Voiceover.

2nd and 3rd Generation Apple TV does not have Siri, so this is not possible.

It has been a long time, but if memory serves correct, I think you can triple
press the Play button to toggle VoiceOver on/off on 2nd and 3rd Generation
Apple TVs.

Re: mac os big sur + mbp 16 2020: feel totally ripped off by the touch bar

2021-04-26 Thread Yuma Decaux
I have not used a windows system for the past 11 years. In fact, I have done
perfectly well without all that windows/jaws/nvaccess combo. Apple's eco system
gives me the unix/linux/terminal facility I need, the music production and
hardware connectivity for my sound design and instrument recording, connects
perfectly with my iphone and other devices for photo air dropping, recording
video and placing to youtube etc, and my academic work is done with the mac. My
line of work is software engineering, and all the math stuff works fine now on
the mac, and the best IDEs for coding are now fully accessible on the mac. I
have no idea if I will at all ever touch a windows system, and am quite happy
to remain that way as Apple's accessibility department is right up there, and
will keep evolving regardless because it's there to stay.

This touch bar though, :)

Re: mac os big sur + mbp 16 2020: feel totally ripped off by the touch bar

2021-04-26 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi,

thanks for your suggestions, however I don't find taking away a whole row of
function keys something that I can accept. These are called function keys for a
reason, they have a function to which you can map something in order for your
workflow to be more efficient.

I'm not a casual mac user, such as listening to music, reading mail or doing
web stuff. I am a full developer, and use the terminal and programming IDEs
extensively, create my own scripts to automate things and do most of the stuff
available on commercial apps with my own knowledge of the system, and even
develop apps that help further that automation.

Giving away a row of function keys that also tend to trigger unwarrantedly,
such as when I'm typing, is also a design flaw. In fact, if you don't see any
use in the touch bar, this is a design flaw in itself. I want something that is
not only slick, and works really well in most circumstances, which is what the
mac does, but I also want something that allows me to fully utilise what the
designers have given me as a tool for my everyday. the touch bar doesn't match
my expectations in this regard, as it's not functional, it lags, often gets in
my way when I type and other things, because I have long thick fingers, but
with mechanical function keys this would not occur, and it takes away
approximately 12 different functions I can map the keys to, such as fast
switching between apps, or between different sections of an app. One such app
is eclipse, or xcode, some apps in the terminal, a whole set of things that now
I have to map to other keyboard shortcuts which is less intuitive, and may
conflict with other keys.

Long story short, I purchased the mbp 16 because I thought that the touch bar
will be snappy and responsive, as I would expect from something as crucial and
critical as function keys, but this is not the case, hence my rant.

This doesn't mean I hate Apple, it's constructive criticism, and I think the
guys at apple hardware are in fact ditching the touch bar anyway.

A++
