T-Mobile confirms the new Apple Watch will get LTE speeds

Good. My faith is somewhat restored. Smile.

T-Mobile confirms the new Apple Watch will get LTE speeds
TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog

The Apple Watch Series 3 comes with built-in LTE, but as MacRumors pointed out,
T-Mobile's add-on $10 wearable plan limits devices to 512kb/s connections.
Tonight T-Mobile CEO John Legere announced its plan for the Watch will include
unlimited 4G LTE speeds, saying that "We always listen & act!" That should help
keep things even among the US carriers for anyone picking up a new iPhone
and/or wrist-worn accessory.

Apple Watch Series 3 Limited to 3G-Like Speeds on T-Mobile

2017-09-15 Thread Mary Otten
Rip off.

Apple Watch Series 3 Limited to 3G-Like Speeds on T-Mobile
MacRumors: Mac News and Rumors / Juli Clover

Apple's new Apple Watch Series 3 models support LTE and UMTS connectivity, but
on T-Mobile, LTE connection speeds won't be available. The carrier is limiting
the Apple Watch to a maximum speed of 512kb/s, which is more like a 3G
connection than an LTE connection.

The speed limitation is noted in T-Mobile's fine print, which says the maximum
wearables speed is 512kb/s. It's also noted on the pre-order page when adding
an Apple Watch Series 3 to your cart.

At issue is T-Mobile's ONE plan, which limits both tethering and all wearable
devices to 512kb/s. While most users are unlikely to be streaming video or
doing other tasks that require high connectivity speeds on the Apple Watch, the
Apple Watch is also unlikely to be a data hog, so it's unclear why T-Mobile has
this limitation in place.

A T-Mobile representative told MacRumors reader Tony that its "High Speed Data
with paired DIGITS" plan would provide 4G LTE data. DIGITS is priced at $25 per
month without autopay, and $20 per month with Autopay.

No other major carrier in the United States, including Sprint, Verizon, or AT
appears to be throttling Apple Watch speeds with their standard unlimited
plans.

All four of the carriers are charging the same $10 per month fee to add an
Apple Watch to an existing iPhone plan, and each one is offering a limited time
promotion that waives monthly fees for the first three months.

The LTE Apple Watch Series 3 models became available for pre-order early this
morning, with new devices slated to arrive on Friday, September 22, the
official launch date for the device.

Re: Copying text from one Apple device to another

2017-09-15 Thread Andrew Lamanche
To add to Jurgen's message, I understand that hands off has to be enabled on
both devices too. I've not tried it but I have recently read about this
somewhere on the web. So it's bluetooth has to be enabled, both devices have
to be on the same wifi and hands off has to be enabled too.

Re: How To Manually manage content on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iTunes 12.7

2017-09-15 Thread Jonathan Cohn
11,000 object to manage, wow! On the Macintosh it might make sense to
create specialized "services" to help manage that amount of material. Have
you thought of tasks you perform several times a week that require multiple
steps to process?

I haven't looked at any of the automation tools in the new OS's or for that
matter Keyboard Maestro but it does sound like you could use some
automation in your life.

iOS 11 without the eye has just been released

2017-09-15 Thread Mary Otten
Jonathan Moes and has just released his new book iOS 11 without the eye. It
might be of particular interest to folks who have not participated in the beta
program, but even those folks might learn a thing or two. I have used these
books in the past, and found them to be quite helpful, as I like written
documentation better than podcast. I'm not going to make any money off of this
post of course. Just passing along the info. The book is $19.95 and is
instantly available now, prior to the release of iOS 11 next Tuesday. You can
go to Moes and consulting.org to pick up that book if you are interested.

Apple Watch Series 3 and AirPods

2017-09-15 Thread Mary Otten
I have the idea that with watches prior to the series 3, there was a Bluetooth
connection between the phone and the watch. With the advent of the LTE, I
wonder if this would free up that connection, so that you could use it with
AirPods for other Bluetooth headset when you're out and you don't have your
phone. Also, maybe this was already known to everyone, but I learned by looking
at the Apple Watch specs that you have to have your phone running iOS 11. So
for folks who wanted to wait a little while before upgrading, you can't do that
if you also want the series 3. Kind of a bummer.

Re: Copying text from one Apple device to another

2017-09-15 Thread Phil Halton
All that is required for this to work is that both devices be signed into the
same iCloud account. Or use this feature all the time and it never gives me any
trouble. Works like a charm. There may be something deep in your settings
regards iCloud that you need to look into, but as far as I know and as far as I
can remember, all I did was sign both devices into the same iCloud account. No
problems.

Re: Copying text from one Apple device to another

2017-09-15 Thread Michael Busboom
I suppose that approach works, but it seems like a lot of trouble, just to get
text from one device to the other. I have a feeling that I have to enable
something in my settings.

I once succeeded in getting this feature to work, but it involved turning my
iPhone off and on several times, which sort of defeats the purpose.

Re: Copying text from one Apple device to another

2017-09-15 Thread Sharon Hooley
What I do is copy or cut the text from the Mac, make a new message to one of my
other email addresses, pasting the text in the message. That way, I can open
that message in my iPhone, copy or cut the text I had pasted, then paste that
into the document app there I use.

Copying text from one Apple device to another

2017-09-15 Thread Michael Busboom
Hello everyone,

I recently needed to copy a moderately long text from my MacBook Pro to my
iPhone. I listened to David Woodbridge’s podcast on this subject, and it
seemed straightforward enough..

In my case, I selected the text I wanted to copy, and then copied it to the
clipboard of my MacBook pro. Then, on my iPhone, I went into the app where I
wanted to insert the text. I went into the edit menu, tried pasting the
information with the Paste option. Unfortunately, all that happened was that
the iPhone pasted in the text that was still in its clipboard from something I
had written earlier. Do I somehow need to flush the iPhone clipboard before I
will be allowed to paste in information from a different device? Do I need to
turn on bluetooth for this feature to work?

Thanks so much in advance,

Mike

Re: Apple Watch with voiceover, use cases and explanatory material

2017-09-15 Thread Alex Hall
There are two settings for waking and speaking. First, you can choose between
waking when you tap the screen, and waking when you raise your wrist. To be
clear, you can have one, the other, or both. Then you choose whether you want
VO to speak on wrist raise. I don't, since there are enough false positives
throughout the day that VO would be chattering too much for me.

This means that you can have it speak when you raise your wrist, or have it
remain silent until you touch the screen. It will always speak when you tap the
screen

When it speaks, if there's a notification, it will read the app name (Messages,
Twitter, etc) first. You swipe right, or touch elsewhere on the screen, to
learn more about the notification. How the text is broken up is up to the app
developer.

Hi Scott,

The closest in NZ I can find to this modem router you have given me here is:

Is this the same device you have?

So right now I’m using a Night Hawk X4 8500 from Net Gear. Supports triband
WiFi, the ability to aggregate two of the ethernet ports, 8 antennas, and a
nice healthy forwarding rate. You might also want to look at one of the mesh
systems like the Amplifi which has a few more knobs so could be customized for
your setup.

How’s that?

Cross-Posted: Duolingo Accessibility

2017-09-15 Thread Christine Grassman
Dear ViPhone and Mac Visionaries Listers:
I have submitted a report about Duolingo’s accessibility shortcomings, made
worse by its most recent update, to an attorney who specializes in encouraging
companies to make inclusion of people with disabilities in the provision of
goods and services a priority. As one of the most frequently downloaded
educational apps the purpose of which is to teach language, there is no reason
why this app should not be completely accessible, particularly with Apple’s
developer tools.
As a person who greatly enjoys learning about and learning languages, I put up
with the glitches and found workarounds to get myself to a 45-day learning
streak. I reached out to the company, but received no reply other than a
“thanks for the information” response.
The most recent update makes it virtually impossible for someone using
VoiceOver to use the app, particularly with respect to the audio: it simply is
not working most of the time.
If anyone who has recently tried, or currently wishes, to use this app would
like to submit their own complaint to the attorney, please write me off-list.
If there is interest in making more noise about this, perhaps through an
applevis or similar campaign, that would also be great.
Have a great day and weekend. For those of you ordering new products today, I
hope your purchasing experience goes through as quickly and smoothly as mine. :)

Hi,

I have the original watch, sport model. Hope to get the 3rd gen for Christmas.

I’ve been very happy with my watch; I wanted it mainly for the time and
notifications. My podcast app gives me notifications so I can keep track of
them. As I don’t carry my phone around the house it’s great for texts, Facebook
messages etc. I occasionally dictate a reply to a friend and have found this to
be very accurate.

Have recently used the heart monitor when my heart started beating very fast. I
like the fact it can vibrate to tell the time as I find this very useful in a
noisy location.

I really wouldn’t want to be without my watch.

All the best
