Thanks Simon,
I might take you up on that offer one day, but so far I’m just taking my time

Re: How to force Voiceover not to announce heading levels

2019-02-08 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Well, I believe this used to be able to be done in with
additional speech verbosity options
If you open up this area and pick the Heading row, you can stop VoiceOver from
speaking the text associated with the heading (name) in the custom verbosity
pull down. But it appears that "Description" can not be disabled and is what is
being read by VoiceOver as "Heading Level 2". I believe in older versions
there were more ways to adjust items in this table, though I never really
tested to see if adjusting the order or checkboxes actually changed what was
spoken.

I suppose you could always paste the body of the message into a plain text
editing field.

Re: Wait, what happened to my wifi?

2019-02-08 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi, Georgina:

I had a cable with me, but the hotel didn't have an rJ45 jack handy, and
none seemed available in the room at the University where our meeting
was conducted. I wouldn't have expected any issues, though. I believe
that's a different chip.

Re: Recording a Podcast

2019-02-08 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello,

What does fancy mean and what is your budget. Is your motive to do it well or
save money? How are you going to stop people talking over each other?

I only have experience with Amadeus Pro with a Blue Yeti microphone. I don’t
know how that would work with a group of people. There’s a lot of resources out
there on getting started with podcasting. Editing is going to be the problem.
But if you are confident that you can do it in one take then use a smart-phone.

Good luck

Subject: Accessible Web Browsers Other Than Safari

Hi,

For the first time after upgrading to Mojave, I ran into a web site that uses
the Java applets, and learned that with Safari 12 and higher, Java is no longer
supported. If that’s in fact true, I guess I need to find another browser for
my Mac that does support Java if I want to continue using that web site. I
realize it’s been discussed before, but I’d like to hear some thoughts about
what browsers others are using that are Accessible.

Thanks,
Pete De Vasto

Re: menu extras

2019-02-08 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Jonathan,

I use those general commands a lot.
Ctrl-F2 - Apple menu.
Ctrl-F3 - Dock.
Ctrl-F5 - Tool bar.
Ctrl-F8 - Menu extras.
Beware of Ctrl-F1 as it toggles keyboard access on and off. Here we disable
that command then use the same keystroke for Speak selected text.
I find it useful to know these kinds of commands just in case VoiceOver fails
me for some reason. However, problems like that are very rare these days.
Cheers,

Anne

Re: Sending an email to a sender and not to the same group?

2019-02-08 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,

With Mojave you can interact with the from line, and then keep interacting
until it says “interact with text”. At this point, move right one or two spaces
with the vo-right keystroke. Then usually you can bring up the contextual menu
and find options for the e-mail address. I would try this first on a message
that was not sent from a mailing list. This way you can understand the process
since with e-mail lists, each distributor and in some cases even the source
makes a difference. You might have noticed sometimes MacVisionaries uses a “on
behalf of” type text in the sender field. These are addresses that if the
mailing list keep the original from/sender line intact, the mail probably would
not get delivered to all the recipients.

Best Wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: cassette tape to mp3

2019-02-08 Thread michael dailey
Hi,

Check out DAK.com . They have an audio workshop, software and
a mixer unit. I think you can buy them separately.

I had the Windows version years ago, they have a Mac version now. I don’t know
how accessible it is.

Send them an email, they are very good at getting back with you.

Good luck,

Re: Using delete and Application keys on Bootcamp

2019-02-08 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
I can confirm Simon's list. I also use these all the time when booted to
Windows on my early 2014 Airbook.

Heck, I couldn't live in Windows without the Windows-Key+X menu!
It's the fastest way I know to a command prompt in the Windows Power
Shell and on to Microsoft's Ubuntu bash prompt when I need it.

Re: Wait, what happened to my wifi?

2019-02-08 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Thanks, Simon. No ESSIDs when booted to Mojave. Lots of ESSIDs on
Windows and Linux.

I don't mind telling you it made me real glad I had Windows and Linux on
this machine. I was there to work.

And, just to close the loop, the University was putting some strange
restrictions on the login process. Even their staff couldn't
successfully log me in on Windows. We had to send my mac address to the
University's IT department to have me entered as an allowed exception in
their firewall tables before I actually got access.

That's not the first time I've had unusual difficulties in the U.K. I
remember a JTC1 Special Working Group on Accessibility meeting some
years ago, probably a decade or so, that was hosted in London at the
British Standards Institute (BSI). That place was so locked down they
only allowed you out on port 80, i.e. all you could do with your
computer is surf the web.

Well, I raised a stink. I rely on ssh access to my data center hosted
server. They took my mac address and gave me port 22 for the duration.

Then there are the various hotel wifi systems around the planet, not so
restricted these days as they were when wifi was first introduced in
hotels. TOS agreements seem mostly gone now, thankfully. I never
understood that. Could you imagine having to sign a TOS to use the
electricity? What's the diff?

Anyone, perhaps the funniest part of wifi use in foreign hotels is
getting the password and login data entered correctly. They want to give
you a piece of paper, of course. Well, OK, they will be gracious and try
to help you in person, but it really needs to be in person usually, and
not over the phone, because they don't usually know the alphabetic
character names in English. I've had them in my room with the laptop on
the desk point my finger to the correct key. Example: the letter y was
not something my sighted assistant in Malaga knew how to say in English!

Almost as bad as going through the buffet line with someone who's
English doesn't usually extend to brockley and stuffed cabbage.

Even though I've digressed, I will add one last thing ... On my way out
of the country to England I was early to Dulles Airport and was
graciously comp'd a pass to the British Airways Business Lounge. Lovely.
I enjoyed waiting there. And, I got personal service. The immigrant who
waited on me tried to be very helpful, but we had to negotiate language
difficulty to do so, e.g. I was offered "Brooklyn Soup." When I asked
what was in it I was told "cheese." Cool, I tried it. Turned out to be
"Brockley and Cheddar Soup."

Best,

Janina

Recording a Podcast

2019-02-08 Thread Todor Fassl
I am looking for suggestions on an extermal microphone for my Macbook
Pro. I need to record a podcast with 3 or 4 people carrying on a
conversation. I don't want to get too fancy but I was thinking of buying
an external microphone and having them kind of huggle around it. I
figure 3 or 4 people can sit around a small table with the microphone in
the middle, right? Any suggestions for a good microphone to use with a
Mac laptop? It probably has to be USB because I believe my Macbook Pro
does not have a microphone jack.

Re: Wait, what happened to my wifi?

2019-02-08 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
It would be a possibility were there a radio signal to attach to, but
there isn't. The only way this could be possible is if they were using a
nonstandard radio frequency for which the Apple hardware isn't tuned.
I'm not even sure you could retune via software alone. Maybe.

Re: Wait, what happened to my wifi?

2019-02-08 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Gina,

You're asking about the next level of configuration when asking about
static or dynamic. That's the configuration of the IP address, the
netmask, the identification of the gateway, and of name resolving
servers, i.e. dns.

I'm not getting far enough for those questions to even come up. For the
record I'm set for dhcp, but it's not yet relevant. Here's why:

When I press VO+m+m and arrow to the wifi menu, there are no access
points listed to choose among. None. Zip. Nada. There's a message in
that menu that says "no signal."

If I go under System Preferences and then Networking I can eventually
move myself to a set of tabs, one of which is 802.1x. There's nothing
special there. It's all default Apple configuration. But, the machine
isn't seeing anyone to talk to.

Same hardware, same electricity, different results between OS X that
ain't working, and Windows and Linux that are.

This is an analog issue of some kind. It's about establishing a radio
link. Until a radio link is proferred, nobody's login or permissions
pol.icies can possibly apply.

Best,

Janina

RE: Adding a signature to my emails

2019-02-08 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Petrus,

Your doing pretty bloody well for the time you've been using the mac.

This list is a great amount of info that now might seem over the top but will
make sense as time goes by.
Just relax and feel free to contact me at home if you need to ask anything
that you don't want to ask on list.

This is a great group of people and yeah sometimes the infos over my head also.

Subject: Adding a signature to my emails

Hi all,
Sorry for this very possibly simple question. As I’m very new to the Mac and
still teaching myself how to use it I feel overwhelmed on this list sometimes
with some of the questions that are asked, as I have know idea what people are
talking about most of the time.

I’m trying to add a signature to my emails but I’m still can’t work it out.
I’m using the native mail app on the Mac. Once I’ve gotten past the subject
field and it has the signature popup button, it actually says none signature ,
I press V O space to open the options. It has: None, ticked, and edit
signatures. So I open the edit option and I can find the signature I want in
the edit field but the button to choose the signature I want is greyed out.
Thank you in advance for any help,
Petrus

2019-02-08 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Janina,

I knew that I was just being stupido,

Just wondering if you could actually see the ssid's for the UK based networks
or if you just had nothing?

I'm assuming you don't have static ip setup on the mac side?

Hi, Simon:

I mean the wifi radio in my early 2014 era Mac Airbook didn't work in the U.K.
when booted to Mojave. It worked perfectly well when booted to Windows 10 or
Linux. And, it's been working perfectly in Mojave since I came home to the U.S.

That's the weird part and suggests some kind of driver flaw to me.
That's my best guess, anyway, because it's the only thing that's different?

2019-02-08 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi,

Fn key plus backspace gives you the delete key,

Windows key should be your left hand command key,

That is the one to the left of the space bar,

Also the start menu can be obtained by doing a CTRL & Escape,

I use these keys daily on my mac book air 2013 with windows 10 in bootcamp.
