Hello,
If one is in the United States then there is also e-readers from
National Library service which could act as a braille display with
VoiceOver. One may have to get onto a waiting list for it.

Re: Affordable Braille display that works with voiceover

Affordable is pretty variable, depending on your circumstances. I’m personally 
in love with my Orbit Reader 20+. I’ve been using it for about a year now, and 
it plays nicely with VoiceOver both on my phone and on my computer. It’s 
noisier than some displays, so keep that in mind if you’re planning to use it 
in a public setting or while recording. I believe it’s currently priced around 
$700.

UTM worked for me but it was a bit tricky installing. Paralells was much easier 
using VOCR.

I am currently running windows 11 on an M2 Mac mini. I’m using parallels, had 
to use VOCR in order to get through the set up process, but it’s a pretty 
seamless process to get going.

Last I checked, Parallels was not accessible with Voiceover, in order to run 
Windows on an Apple Silicon Mac, you need to sign up for the Microsoft insider 
program and download Windows for ARM processors which has not been officially 
released. If you need to use Windows you would be better off just getting a PC.

the app will do some crapy updates on the webview

morning, I think that to categorize the Brailliant is a display that is 
issues I don't think is quite completely true. I'm using a brilliant PI 
40 X right now. I think the real issue is knowing when you should 
connected up to a machine and when it is appropriate to leave it set up 
were Bluetooth only. Very situation specific. What do I mean by that if 
your just checking mail and if you're just working on a few things and 
you're in a location where you don't want that expensive cable that you 
just spent loads of money buying than Bluetooth is probably your best 
friend. If you are on the other hand needing to move documents to and 
from the unit, and you might seriously consider that you have the unit 
connected via a cable. Since transferring files between the units 
probably should not be done under Bluetooth. This is true whether you 
are using Bluetooth under Mac OS, or Bluetooth under Microsoft Windows. 
Here's hoping that this message finds you, and everyone on the list well.



Here's also hoping that my thoughts got out properly I'm actually 
dictating this to the computer because of a additional disability and 
I'm using a virtual machine on a Mac but running in a virtual version of 
Microsoft Windows 11 be well everyone.

absolutely necessary, since in a setting like that, it would be more prone to 
being dropped, and considering the fact that it costs a lot to manufacture 
them, dropping one is the last thing anyone would want to be doing.

Reports that I've read suggest that its configuration process is not 
accessible. However, VMWare is active in accessibility, so I would

Mac OS version with working accessibility.

Hi,

Parallels is doable but requires that you add an app called VOCR to your system 
to read the OS install screens. GitHub - chigkim/VOCR 
 is where you can get this.

There are several steps to getting this installed involving giving various 
permissions but the steps on the GitHub web page are pretty clear on what you 
need to do.
If you then choose File:New, in Parallels you can run OCR and issue mouse 
clicks on the get windows option and then continue. Rerun OCR and then issue a 
mouse click on Install Windows.

Things should be automatic from that point until you can launch Narrator.

You’ll likely want to use a utility called Sharp Keys, to remap caps lock in 
the Windows OS.

There is a third option beyond Fusion, which did recently announce a production 
version of Fusion for the M1 and M2 Macs.  UTM, available from the Mac App 
Store or as a download, is a GUI front end to an open source virtualization 
platform called QEMU. You can create VMs on the M1 and M2 Macs here by starting 
with a VHDX file from the Windows Insider program.  There are more hoops you 
have to jump through with UTM but it also works.

I’ve used all three of these solutions with success on an M1 Mac. BTW, Fusion 
has a free personal license you can obtain. Parallels has I believe about a $99 
a year subscription for the basic option and I think $119 for the Pro, which 
includes command line support and more.

I am working on a audio demo of installing and such with Parallels and hope to 
have it done in a couple days.

Hit, if you install the Linux options with Parallels, the default password 
created for the account that Parallels creates, is the same as your Mac OS 
password. I’m sharing this because at least for me the answer wasn’t 
immediately obvious.

When I travel with the Mantis, I just put it in the case with my Mac.  Because 
it is so thin, it fits very nicely.  But I do agree, a case would have been a 
good thing.  Though I think APH was trying to keep the price down, and also 
that their primary market was school systems, so perhaps they thought it 
wouldn’t be necessary.

was surprised the thing didn't come with the leather case you can
close. The brailliant bi 40x is also pretty nice, but it seems to have
issues with the bluetooth staying connected sometimes.

braille display, and ended up buying another one.  I found that the placement 
of the thumb keys on the Mantis causes my hands to cramp.  I couldn’t read on 
it for more than about five minutes before my hands started to hurt.  So I 
bought a Brailliant.  The Brailliant is now the display I use for reading, and 
the Mantis is what I use when I want a qwerty keyboard for writing.  Both are 
good displays, but I would encourage you to find one that is comfortable for 
your hands, if you do much braille reading.  When I purchased it, the 
Brailliant was $3,495.

Running Windows on Apple Silicon MBP

What is the recommended method for running windows 10 or 11 on Apple Silicon 
with Mac OS 13? 

I may run either windows 10 or 11. What would be the best option? Or actually 
what are the available options in this regards?

RE: Affordable Braille display that works with voiceover

The Orbit 20 or 40 are priced afordibley. I think the 20 is around 600 and the 
40 is at 1600. I think there good displays. They do make a little noise but for 
where I use braille mainly at home the Orbit does the job pretty well. Aph has 
the Mantis which I use almost every day which is a qwerty keyboard 40 cell 
option but is 2895 dollars at this time.
