Query re setting up a new Macbook Air from scratch using Voiceover?

2023-12-16 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

Really hoping you guys can help me here with your collective
expertese/experience. I have a new 2022 Macbook Air arriving tomorrow, which
I’m very excited about, as I’ve been waiting and saving a long time for it.
However, as it’s being delivered to my home it means that I’ve got to try to
set it up myself from scratch using Voiceover.

I’ve never done this myself before, so I’m really hoping that someone can reply
to this message with some truly idiot-proof/step-by-step instructions that I
can follow to set it up without making any catastrophic mistakes/crashing the
machine before I’ve even got going!! I mean, for a start, how on earth do you
even get Voiceover to come on when you first turn on the Mac so that you can
set it all up?

As you can see, I really do have no idea what I’m doing with this one. So any
help/guidance anyone can give from the point of view of someone with no sight
doing this really would be very much appreciated and most gratefully received.

Thanks so much for any responses.

Eleanor

Recommendations for a mini bluetooth keyboard to use with iPad and iPhone please

2022-03-06 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

I’m after a mini bluetooth keyboard to use with my iPad and iPhone. I don’t
want a full-sized keyboard, as I’m a good touch typist and am used to small
keys, +, I want a keyboard that can be easily transported taking up the least
space possible. But that said, it does still have to be good quality/good to
use and easy to set up.

So if anyone has any reccomendations at all all ideas would be most gratefully
received.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: How can I update my new iPad through the USB port on my MacBook Air 2013?

2022-02-13 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Thanks for that info. Could you recommend one that might be good that, for
instance, I could get from Amazon?? Apologies for my ignorance here, but this
is the first time I've encountered this, so all advice and recommendations
would really be appreciated.

Thanks.

How can I update my new iPad through the USB port on my MacBook Air 2013?

2022-02-13 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

Hoping that some of you may be able to advise me on this. I have a MacBook Air
2013, which is still working perfectly so I've no intention of
changing/upgrading. I've used this Mac to update all my IOS devices ever since
I've had it. However, I've just received a new iPad which only has USB-C
connectivity. My Mac only has normal USB ports on it. So how can I update my
new iPad using my Mac? Is there an adapter that I need to get to enable me to
do this? If so, does anyone have any recommendations of good adapters that will
allow me to update this iPad through my Mac easily/without hassle?

Thanks so much for any help you can give, and all advice/suggestions very much
appreciated and gratefully received.

How can I transfer data from my IPhone 8 to my IPhone SE2020 by connecting the 2 phones?

2021-04-28 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

Hoping someone can help with this. I have an IPhone 8, which I've had for
years, and a new IPhone SE2020. I'd like to be able to transfer all my data etc
straight from my IPhone 8 to my SE without having to go through my Mac. Someone
said once that there was a way of doing it by connecting the 2 phones together,
and that it was much more secure/reliable. So I just wondered if this was the
case? What would I need to do it? And how would I go about doing it?

Sorry for all the questions, but if anyone haas any answers/could give me any
instructions I'd be really grateful.

Many thanks

Does anyone know how to create an event on Facebook using your personal profile on IPad/IPhone??

2021-02-27 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

Just wondering if anyone could help with this please. I’ve got an event coming
up and would like to create it on Facebook. I don’t have a Facebook page of any
sort, just my own personal profile. So just wondered if anyone could send me
some instructions on how to create a Facebook event using my personal profile
please?? I’d be creating it using my IPad or IPhone, not computer.

Many thanks for any help anyone can give.

Is anyone else having problems with photo descriptions linking themselves to the wrong photos in IOS14.3?

2020-12-30 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem? Up to fairly recently,
when I've put descriptions on my photos, they've all been fine and have stayed
with the right photos. However, since updating to IOS14.3 my photo descriptions
seem to have gone mad and have started attaching themselves to completely
random photos. So when I've thought I was showing someone one picture it's
actually been something totally different. With sighted help I've tried
re-labelling them all, but it's not worked, as the descriptions have just gone
and relocated themselves again.

So just wondered if anyone else has been having this/similar issues? If so,
does anyone know of a way of fixing it?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Query re how to transfer ringtones not purchased through Apple from IPad to newly-restored IPhone?

2020-08-04 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

Hoping someone may be able to help with this. I was having a major battery
drain issue on my IPhone 8, which wasn't resolving despite trying all the usual
suggestions. So I ended up being advised to restore the phone, set up as a
totally new device, and not transfer data through an ICloud back-up etc in
order to avoid any possible rubbish/bugs/glitches being brought across. I did
this and it's worked - IPhone is now wonderful.

However, I had a significant number of ringtones which I'd downloaded from
other people/sites (not got through Apple), and these haven't come across to my
phone. They are still on my IPad. So was just wondering if anyone knew of a way
I could transfer my ringtones from my IPad to my phone without transferring
everything else on there??

Any suggestions/methods/step-by-step instructions on how I can do this really
would be much appreciated, as really would like to get all my lovely tones back
onto my phone.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.

Query re ridiculously high home and locked screen usage and battery drain on new IPhone SE2020 - help appreciated please

2020-07-29 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

Hoping someone may be able to assist with this. Over the last couple of months
I’ve been noticing unusually fast battery drain, both on my new IPhone SE2020,
and also on my old IPhone 8. If it was just the IPhone 8 I might not be so
bothered as it’s an older device, but I can’t understand the new SE doing/being
the same. What has particularly surprised me is how high my home and locked
screen use appears to be. Have never had this problem before. Have checked all
the settings that are suggested on the internet to prolong battery life, and
they all appear to be as they should be.

So if anyone has any ideas as to how I can increase the amount of time my
battery lasts, and, particularly, how I can get this stupid home and locked
screen usage value reduced from the stupidly high value it says it is at the
moment I’d be really really grateful!!

Thanks in advance.

More urgent queries re setting up my Mac and the log-in screen with Voiceover

2020-04-30 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

Thanks for all the help you’ve given me so far. However, I’m still struggling
with my Mac. I turned off Filevault, which went fine. However, when I started
my Mac this morning and got to the log-in screen VoiceOver did kick in. But
when I entered my username and password it told me that log-in had failed and
that my screen was locked.

Any ideas how I can sort this out??? All help most greatfully
received/appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: Urgent query re setting up my Mac and the log-in screen with Voiceover

2020-04-29 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

Thanks so much for this info. Had no idea it would have an impact. Will
definitely disable Filevault

While I’m on, just another question. From the desktop what is the best way to
access things like system preferences, the app store, mail, etc using VO?? All
the settings etc I had before have all obviously been lost, and it’s been so
many years since the Mac was first set up I’ve got no idea/just can’t remember
how to do it/get to those areas.

Again, any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Urgent query re setting up my Mac and the log-in screen with Voiceover

2020-04-29 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

Really really hoping someone can help with this. I have just had my Mac back
after having to send it away for repair as it decided to crash/stop working
completely. They appear to have done a clean install of Katalena. I have spent
this evening re-setting it up with a friend. However, we are really struggling
with VoiceOver. We went into system preferences and accessibility and enabled
VO. We then went into users and groups, log-in options and accessibility
options, and ticked the box that said about enabling VO from the start.
However, this does not appear to have worked. Every time I now start my Mac VO
literally says the word “username” and nothing more. It won’t tell me where I’m
navigating on the screen or anything like that. So I literally can’t enter my
password and log in myself. So was just wondering if anyone else has had/is
having this problem with Katalena? Could anyone please send me a set of
idiotproof instructions as to how I can set up VO properly and fix this problem
please??? Any help really would be much appreciated, as what’s the point in
having a Mac when VO won’t even speak to me to enable me to log in!!!

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.

Any suggestions welcomed/appreciated for ways to protect my MacBook Air please?

2020-04-20 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi All

Hoping the wealth of experience on here can help me with this one. I’m having
to send my 11 inch mid-2013 MacBook Air away for a check/service, as it seems
to have decided to have a major crash, and nothing we’ve tried has been able to
fix it.

When I booked it in for collection today the adviser on the phone told me that
I’d have to remove it from its hard shell, as, especially in the current
situation, they weren’t prepared to take it with that on. So my Dad and I have
literally spent the whole evening trying to remove this blasted shell from the
Mac. After hours of swearing etc we’ve finally managed to get it off - we
seriously hope we’ve not damaged the Mac in the process.

However, this has left me really really nervous about/reluctant to put a shell
back on it when I get it back. So I was just wondering if people could give me
any advice/ideas/suggestions about what other protective measures I could use
instead so I don’t go having to battle with putting another shell on the Mac
etc?? If a shell really is the best way of doing it, then could anyone
recommend which ones are the most decent/the best??

Many thanks for any help anyone can give with this.

Query re how to update my IPad through my Mac having upgraded to Catalina?

2019-12-11 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

Really hoping someone can help me here. I’d like to update my IPad to IOS13.3.
I’ve always managed to do it successfully through my Mac up to now. However,
this is the first time I’ve tried since finally upgrading to the latest Mac
operating system, Catalina, and I’ve hit a real problem. For some reason ITunes
on my Mac seems to have completely vanished ... or it’s so well hidden I can’t
find it. Also, when I’ve reset the network settings on my IPad and plugged it
into my Mac the dialogue which used to appear asking me about the IPad and the
computer trusting each other just hasn’t come up.

So I’m really hoping someone can help me and can send me some instructions on
how to update my IPad through my Mac now using the new Mac OS??.

Many thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.

Re: Question about mail on the iPad.

2019-04-14 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi. Must admit I’ve been finding this a bit tricky too. However, I’m using a
keyboard, not the touch screen, so can anyone tell me how I can get back to the
message and/or mailbox lists using my keyboard?? Also, when I’m editing my mail
to move some of it to the trash, as I’m navigating through the lists selecting
messages to move, the IPad will suddenly just jump me into the middle of the
body of the message. Is there a reason why it’s doing this? Is there a way I
can avoid it doing this so I can just navigate through the message list and
select what I want without suddenly being thrown out of it?

Thanks.

Re: How can I check that all my photos are syncing across all my devices - particularly my Mac?

2019-04-04 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Thanks for this Tim. I’ll definitely give it a try. My Mac just randomly keeps
saying unable to access ICloud and ITunes library. There’s no pattern to it
saying it - it just seems to do so when it feels like it - and I don’t really
know what I can do about that. Would I find that sort of information/a solution
for it in system preferences too??

Thanks for any help.

How can I check that all my photos are syncing across all my devices - particularly my Mac?

2019-04-04 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

Hoping someone can help. I am currently trying to make sure that all my photos
are syncing properly across all my devices (IPhone, IPad and Mac) as well as to
ICloud. The IPhone and IPad aren’t so much of a problem, as I know that ICloud
Photo Library’s on. However, as for my Mac, I don’t have a clue what I’m doing.

So, firstly, how can I check that my Mac’s properly connected to ICloud?
Secondly, how do I check that ICloud Photo Library’s turned on on my Mac?
Thirdly, how do I use the photos app on my Mac? Fourthly, how can I ensure that
all the photos I have do actually sync across all my devices?, including when
my IPhone or IPad are actually plugged into my Mac?

So sorry for all the questions, but I really want to get this sorted out and
get everything working in harmony again. So any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

How can you ensure that Voiceover’s turned on so you can set up a new IPad yourself?

2019-03-27 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

Hoping someone can help with this, as I’m asking on behalf of a friend. He has
a brand new IPad Mini being delivered to his home on Friday. He’s a voiceover
user (no sight at all). So, when he gets the IPad out of the box how can he
turn Voiceover on so he can go through the set-up process/know what he’s doing
and what’s going on? He doesn’t really want to go into a shop unless he really
has to, as that’s quite a trek for him. So if there’s a way he can turn VO on
so he can do the set-up himself at home that’d be great.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks.

Some queries re what settings I should check having upgraded to a new IPhone?

2019-03-14 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

I’m hoping someone can assist me with this. I’ve just upgraded to an IPhone 8.
The shop transferred my sim card, and most things seem to have come across ok.
However, I’m just after any advice as to what settings people think I
should/it’s important to check on my new phone to make sure they’ve all
transferred correctly?? I’m particularly interested in saving as much power as
possible, and also in protecting my privacy. So any advice would be veery much
appreciated.

Secondly, how do I go about changing the name of my IPhone, both on my phone
and my Mac?, so that I know it’s my new phone I’m dealing with? And how do I go
about removing any old phones from my Mac?

Thirdly, there are some apps on this phone that I definitely don’t want
on/won’t use, and I thought that if I removed them I might save myself quite a
bit of storage space. So how/what’s the best way of doing this?

Finally, how do I check that text message forwarding is working correctly
between my new phone and my IPad/Mac?

Sorry for all the questions, but any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Some queries re setting up/using my Amazon Echo Dot 3rd generation with IPhone/IPad, particularly how to set radio alarms

2019-01-15 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

I’m wondering if anyone can help me with this one. I received an Amazon Echo
Dot 3rd generation at the weekend for my birthday. Now, I absolutely love it,
but I’m concerned I’ve not set it up properly or not linked something from the
Alexa app properly etc, as one of the things I really want to use it for
immediately isn’t working properly, and I just don’t know why.

Basically, I want to set an alarm on it to wake me up in the morning with my
favourite radio station. However, it won’t/doesn’t seem to want to let me use
the radio station I want to, and yet it’ll set it perfectly happily to any
other station I ask it. Where it gets even stranger is that it’ll quite happily
play the station I want to use as an alarm. So I don’t understand what I’m
doing wrong? So any help/ideas/suggestions would be much appreciated? Are there
things I need to check on the Alexa app, the Dot itself, or any other apps on
my phone??

Also, I thought I’d managed to link my Google calendar to the Dot, but again,
it’s not letting me use all the functionality that it’s meant to have. For
example, it might let me add an event, but it won’t let me move one. So again,
any advice on how I can check that everything’s properly linked/connected would
be much appreciated.

Finally, if anyone has any suggestions on how I can double-check that my Dot’s
set up correctly, things I should do, things it would be worth me
enabling/linking, etc I’d be really grateful. I think I could really make use
of the device, but to be honest, I feel like I don’t have a clue what I’m doing
with it, especially with it playing up like this when I thought I’d done
everything ok.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Does anyone know if there's a way of leaving VO turned on on my Mac permanently??

2017-07-06 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I use VO on my Mac all the time.
However, every time I go to turn my Mac on at the start of a new session VO
doesn't come on automatically. It always used to, but since updating to the
latest OS I've had to manually turn VO on every time with command F5. This
isn't really too much of a hassle, but it's very annoying as I can't see the
screen at all so could really do with VO coming on right from the word go,
particularly when the Mac is running updates etc etc. So does anyone know how I
can get my Mac to go back to VO coming on automatically??

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks.

Does anyone know how I can link my Twitter and Facebook accounts so I can simultaneously post to both?

2017-05-12 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

Apologies for cross-posting, but I'm hoping someone might know the answer to
this/be able to help me. I have a Twitter and a Facebook account, and I'd like
to be able to link the 2 so that I can simultaneously post to both. I'm using
IOS. A friend told me that it was possible, and gave me the name of an app,
TweetCaster, but when I downloaded it I found it terribly inaccessible with
VoiceOver. I then tried to look up how to do it online, and managed to totally
confuse myself with all the different methods that came up. So I was wondering
if anyone knew/could tell me of the best way/how I can go about linking my 2
accounts? Do I need to do it through websites?, or is there a more accessible
app that will allow me to do so?

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Query re transferring ringtones etc from my Mac onto my new IPhone

2017-01-04 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I upgraded my IPhone today, and the
shop did a great job of setting it up and bringing all my contacts, calendars,
etc across onto my new phone. However, most of my ringtones that I had on my
old phone (many of which were got from ITunes or were free ones that other
people sent me) haven't been transferred (I literally only have the factory
ones on my new phone at present). So was wondering if anyone could tell me how
I go about putting all these ringtones etc back on my phone through my Mac?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: Microsoft Word on the mac does not want to read more than a few pages out of a long document

2015-08-12 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

Just a note which is probably stating the obvious, but if you're having trouble
with Microsoft Word or any part of the Microsoft sweet then please please feed
it back to them! I have!! The only way they'll listen to us and improve their
accessibility for us is if as many people as possible feed back and tell them
what's wrong and how it needs to be fixed. If we don't all feed back then
it'll just get ignored/brushed under the carpet, which none of us want! Having
said that, if you find positive stuff then please let them know about that
too, so they don't always think we're just a bunch of moaners.

Thanks, and sorry for the rant, but really, if we want things fixed then the
only way it'll be achieved is by feedback from as many as possible.

Can anyone tell me how to restore/reset Safari on a Mac, as the toolbar seems to have completely disappeared?

2015-08-04 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

I’m sending this query on behalf of a friend. He was trying to use Safari on
his Mac this morning, went to try and enter a website address, and discovered
that the toolbar in Safari on his Mac seems to have completely disappeared.
`i’ve tried everything I can think of to see if he can get it back, but
nothing’s worked. So wondered if anyone knows how he can restore Safari to it’s
original settings/how it should be??

Any help/ideas would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Want to install MS Word or Office365 on my Mac - help needed please?!

2015-07-10 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

Wonder if anyone can help me. I'm looking to install Ofice365 or MS Word onto
my Mac. I already use MS Word on my IPhone and IPad, and it's getting better
and better, so now I'd like to try and get it on to my Mac too. I also already
have an Office365 account because of my IPad and IPhone. However, when I do a
search in the Mac app store it brings up a load of results and I've no idea
what's best to go for?

So if anyone's already running Word or Office365 on their Mac would be most
grateful if you could tell me exactly what I need to look for in the app store
etc.

Many thanks for any help, and sorry for the seemingly stupid question, but the
app store has completely confused me!!

Wondering if anyone can be of any help here. Yesterday I installed
Twitterrific on my IPad and IPhone. So far it looks really good, bbut I have a
couple of questions which I'm hoping someone may know the answer to.

Firstly, doo you know if Twitterrific would also work on my Mac?

Secondly, I read in the help section of Twitterrific's settings about
cleanning your timeline cash data and reloading your tweets without all the
extra rubbish. I tried to follow the instructions they gave, but with
relatively little joy. Has anyone else done this using VO?, and if so could
you send me some instructions on how to do this??

Many thanks for any help you can give.

 Eleanor

Can anyone tell me how I go about editing the bio of my Twitter profile using voiceover please?

2015-06-13 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via MacVisionaries
Hi all

Just a quick question. I'm trying to edit the information/bbio in my Twitter
profile using voiceover. I've tried it on all 3 of my devices (IPhone, IPad
and Mac) and every time I get to the place where I can edit the text it all of
a sudden seems to become completely inaccessible. Voiceover stops reading the
text in the field I'm editing, so I've no idea where abouts in the information
I am, so consequently can't delete/amend/type anything different. My Apple
personal ttrainer spent 35 minutes in my lesson today trying to do the same
thing using voiceover, but with absolutely no joy at all.

So does anyone know how I can successfully go about editing the
information/bio in my Twitter profile using voiceover?? Is it actually
accessible? Or am I always going to have to rely on a sighted person to change
things for me??

Any help/information anyone could give on this would be most gratefully
appreciated. My personal trainer has sent an e-mail to Twitter complaining
about their inaccessibility in this regard. Would encourage anyone else who's
having this problem to do the same in the hopes that Twitter will listen and
improve things for us.
