Re: problems with shared folders between mac and linux sold
Well, if you mean the integration of all the tools in an out of the box installed product, it's certainly there on Linux for many users. The a11y use case has also been demonstrated by small distro knockoffs like Vinux. It's not there, however, at the level that you can head over to Best Buy and come with a working Linux desktop system. So, it's always possible you will fail over driver issues and the like. Each to their own, of course. But my main machine remains a Linux, currently Fedora 23. I turn to my Mac to see how things work elsewhere by way of comparison. Ditto for my Windows vm. I will freely admit there are particular niche tasks I can't do on my Linux box. But they are few. I 'm perfectly happy with the bulk of what I need daily, email, web, etc. And, in case your curious, I still spend more time in Speakup than in Orca. Given what I'm seeing by way of a11y API development, I frankly expect blink related a11y to actually take the lead. Microsoft have barely started implementing an API for UI Automation, but they've declared the DOM dead. Look out JAWS. And Apple won't even let you peek at the OSX accessibility API--not even if you're a big, stock market listed third party vendor. Re: requesting help with linux and VM Fusion on mac.
Hi, Your Mac uses netbios to share its folders. This is why it's relatively easier to share your host's file system in a Windows VMware guest machine--netbios is natively a Microsoft way of doing such things. You have two choices for access Mac hosted file systems under Linux virtual machines: 1.) Install and configure Samba in order to get netbios services under Linux. This is a common application, and apt-get on your Ubuntu machine will know about Samba. 2.) Find, install and configure a NFS server on your Mac. NFS is the preferred way to mount file systems hosted across a network under Linux, and is easily configured on the Linux side of things. However, it's not common on Mac to share using NFS. PS: It's fairly easy to go the other way around with NFS. In other words, it's fairly easy to read NFS exported file systems from a Linux virtual host machine on the Mac host. In my situation I have my Airbook configured to access files from my home office Linux servers using NFS. The point here is that you're using network technology to mount remote file systems--even though both machines are in the same physical box. The communication between your Mac and your VMware virtual machines is using TCP/IP. hth Janina Michael Marshall writes: > hey all, > yesterday i at last got open VM tools installed on ubuntu mate v 15 so i > could hopefully share and mirror folders from the mac on my virtual machine. > even after installing open VM tools i could not find my shared folders, nor > could i see anything in any of the folders i wanted to mirror between the two > machines. > is there something that i'm doing wrong? the installation of open VM tools > went exactly according to plan but that was as far as i got. > I find this incredibly irritating and i'm out of ideas. > i even tried this on the mane ubuntu distro without any luck. > > thanks for any help > > Michael > > -- > The following information is important for all members of the Mac Visionaries > list. > > If you have any questions or concerns about the running of this list, or if > you feel that a member's post is inappropriate, please contact the owners or > moderators directly rather than posting on the list itself. > > Your Mac Visionaries list moderator is Mark Taylor and your owner is Cara > Quinn - you can reach Cara at caraqu...@caraquinn.com > > The archives for this list can be searched at: > http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries@googlegroups.com/ > --- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups > "MacVisionaries" group. > To unsubscribe from this group and stop receiving emails from it, send an > email to macvisionaries+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. > To post to this group, send email to macvisionaries@googlegroups.com. > Visit this group at https://groups.google.com/group/macvisionaries. > For more options, visit https://groups.google.com/d/optout. -- Janina Sajka, Phone: +1.443.300.2200 sip:jan...@asterisk.rednote.net Email: jan...@rednote.net Linux Foundation Fellow Executive Chair, Accessibility Workgroup: http://a11y.org The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) Chair, Accessible Platform Architectureshttp://www.w3.org/wai/apa -- The following information is important for all members of the Mac Visionaries list. Re: problems with shared folders between mac and linux sold
Well, I think the reason so few people use Linux desktops has more to do with the Linux industry deciding to focus on the back office. There were some very specific corporate decisions about this in the mid 2000's. I was in the middle of them as Chair of the Open A11y work. All of sudden, corporations were pulling staff assigned to work on Linux desktop accessibility. But it what I saw was actually part of the wider disinvestment in the Linux desktop itself. Sharing files across OS environments isn't that hard. It's as old and as reliable over TCP/IP as the ftp protocol, and all the major file systems can be supported, if needed. Furthermore, tools like Libre Office can read and write all kinds of file formats with minimal user involvement, e.g. I haven't used Ms Word in well over a decade, but have no problem reading docx files that I'm sent. Just my 2 cents American on the topic. Re: requesting help from anyone using linux sonar in a virtual machine
Did you run the integrity check on the ISO image? I have not used Sonar, but there's surely some kind of checksum provided, and you should use it to ascertain that the file you have on your local drive is a true copy of the original. It might, for example, require you to run a sha command of some kind. One way beginners go wrong with iso files is to try and copy and paste them to their cd burners. As you were able to get at the files inside, the iso, you were clearly able to mount it somewhere. And, it's certainly possible it's a malformed iso image at the source. Checksum should help disambiguate. Keyboard shortcuts broken after VMware's remote support
Hi Once Again, In my other two messages about my saga with my upgrade to VMware 8, I've explained how I successfully got past the problems with VMware's reliance on Cisco Webex for remote access. I've also described the partial success VMware Tech Support had fixing my issue. Windows works, Linux does not. Bummer -- but that's another thread. VMware seems to have broken my Mac key mappings. Most noticable case in point ... Command+M no longer takes me to the menu bar. Rather Vo responds "Minimize." If I want the menu bar, I have to do Ctrl+F2, a more awkward gesture. There are other mapping issues as well. For instance, I can't seem to actually get my keyboard into the Windows vm. I seem stuck in the VMware chrome on the Mac. I'll have to hack at this one. Anyone know, or have a thought of what might have happened here? How do I get my familiar Apple mappings back? Thanks in advance for any help on this one particularly. Re: Unresponsive text input field [Was: No sound in vm's after upgrading to VMware 8]
Hi, I have an update on my VMware 8 problem. I'll respond on this thread about the problem allowing VMware Support to remotely access my machine ... It turned out Firefox wasn't of help anymore than Safari or Google-Chrome. We resolved the problem by having the VMware tech email me a complete URI that included the particulars. That allowed me past that part of the process and into the menu where I could allow them access. Unfortunately, the problems didn't end there. Once the Cisco Webex screen was up, I had to work around buttons without labels. Fortunately, the menu bar provided another way to allow VMware to start the remote session. Interestingly, it came with a keyboard shortcut. More in my other response. Re: No sound in vm's after upgrading to VMware 8
Hi, My second update on my problem with of no sound in my virtual machines after upgrading to VMware 8. After getting through the issues of allowing VMware support remote access to my Airbook, the problem for Windows 7 was solved fairly easily. There was apparently a screen popup that I had never encountered relating to updating the VMware Tools for this virtual machine. Once that was done, NVDA and all system sounds worked as expected. I have now cloned my Win7 machine and expect to do an upgrade to Win10 in the next day or so. There was no success getting sound working for my Fedora 22 virtual machine. Reinstalling the VMware Tools for Linux did not solve the problem. The machine launches and appears to be running, but no sound is communicated to the Airbook's audio device. I can ssh into the machine and ascertain that all the alsa settings are correct. An apaly command behaves as though sound were playing--but no sound eminates. Nor is espeak speaking. As my support person was apparently at the end of their knowledge for Linux vms, I decided not to worry so much about fixing this particular machine, but to take another tack toward a possible solution. I will try a fresh Fedora (or possibly an Arch) install this weekend. If that works, I won't mind deleting the now out of date Fedora. So, more news to come in this saga. Meanwhile, I realize I have a third issue as a result of VMware's remote tinkering. Guess I'll start another thread for that one ... Unresponsive text input field [Was: No sound in vm's after upgrading to VMware 8]
Hi, All: I was just on the phone with VMware tech support. The idea was that we would establish a Webex session that would allow the tech access to my Airbook to figure out, hopefully, what's wrong with the sound in my virtual machines. I was unable to get him on. Per his instructions, I opened Safari to http://vmware.webex.com and attempted to put his 9 digit code in the edit text field. I believe I was correctly focused on the field, but my typing did nothing. No chars were echoed, nor did any end up in the field. Anyone have a thought on what I might be doing wrong? I did the usual VO plus down arrow, and Voice told me I was interacting with the field. But nothing happened. No chars entered, no chars echoed. Meanwhile, I'm having no problems typing in any other field within Safari, on http://ddg.gg, for instance. VO works as expected there. Frustrating.
