Good evening, if in the system preferences under software update if you set
it to update automatically for major software upgrades it will just inform you
that an update is available for your Mac. Then you will be given the choice to
update

Now if your running a currant version you will see updates. If you haven’t
moved to the newest op then you will get nag screens telling you to upgrade.

High Sierra doesn't have the System Updates pain in System Preferences. That
pain first appeared in Mojave so you'll still see Mac Updates in the Mac App

includes updates to the current Mojave Mac OS, but not a full upgrade to a new
