Re: External SSD crashes Finder & Disk Utilities

2022-07-10 Thread mr.robertcole via MacVisionaries
Hi,
As someone suggested, I used terminal to format the drive. Then Disk Utility
saw it without crashing.
I used recovery mode to reinstall Monterey, While in recovery mode, I also
renamed the drive and the data drive was automatically renamed as well.
So everything is good.
Thanks,
Rob

Hi,

First, you should not mess with the name of the Data drive related to the
system volume. Normally, this will not crash your system, although Disk
Utility may take a quite a while to determine what’s what. Try giving it a
five or ten minutes to resolve the drive, then see if you can manipulate it
from within Disk Utility. Terminal is also an option, but it may still give
you the spinning of death before it’s found in Terminal as well.

Later…

It is my understanding that you can format storage devices from the shell
prompt in Mac OS.
You should be able to look up the command syntax on the Web, then run
Terminal and carefully use a command to reformat the device.

External SSD crashes Finder & Disk Utilities

2022-07-08 Thread mr.robertcole via MacVisionaries
Dear List,
You know that saying, If its not broken, Don’t fix it.
Well, I didn’t listen. I was running Big Sur on a external SSD, while Monterey
was installed on the internal spindle drive.
So today I decided to upgrade the SSD from Big Sur to Monterey.
The upgrade seemed to go OK, So since the SSD drive was named Big Sur, I
renamed it to Monterey SSD, and I also renamed the data drive to Monterey
SSD-Data.
Guess what! Yes, the Mac will not boot the SSD. I have to remove it in order to
boot into recovery, but soon as I plug it in, Recovery disk utility stops
responding.
So again I unplugged it and restarted the Mac booting with the internal
spindle drive running Monterey, But finder stops responding when I plug in the
SSD.
So if I can’t rename or format the SSD, What do I do?
Please give me some advice!
Thanks,
Rob
