Well, at least on the Mac a mute can be reversed with volume keys also. I
believe F10 is mute, F11 is volume down and F12 is volume up on most Apple
keyboards. Generally I have to use the Fn key with these. Also, in the sounds
system settings area is a play tone while adjusting

I seem to have accidentally muted my Mac. something on the keyboard tray was
too close and must've pressed a key when I moved it. how do I unmute it?
