Re: voice changes after mavericks upgrade

2014-04-29 Thread Terje Strømberg
I am guessing. Regarding the Russian voice, this file needs to be saved in the
voice over folder. First copy the file from Mountain Lion. It was like this
with the Norwegian voice. Now i could not find it again. Maybe you need to type
something in Terminal to get open some files. To get authorization to theese
folders. I could find this command either. Out of luck today. Others on this
list know this command or search for it in google.

Take care

Hi Mary,

If you are wanting different system voices, go to the system preferences and to
dictation and speech. Choose the speech tab and choose custom voices. There you
will see all of the voices grouped by language. You need to checkmark any voice

2014-04-28 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Robert,
I have in fact successfully downloaded some of the new voices. But what I
really want to do is get back some of the old voices, such as Samantha, Tom,
and the Russian voice. And I have not been able to do that. Samantha and Tom
are in the list. I had thought they weren't, but they are.
I tried unchecking Samantha Tom and the Russian voice, then closing out
preferences, and coming back in and checking them. But of course that didn't
work. So then I have been trying to uninstall the old files, and I'm not having
any luck. Hopefully, this can be resolved. I am not all that thrilled with
these new voices. Of course I love Alex. But if these are in fact the
expressive voices, I'm not sure what all the shouting is about. Smile.

Hi Shawn,

So you are saying that Samantha and, presumably also Tom, since he is part of
vocalizer expressive, are still suppose to be available under Mavericks? That
is very interesting. I wonder if there is a way to delete the old files and
somehow reacquire them, although I didn't think I saw Samantha or Tom in the
list of voices in the customize dialogue under text to speech in the system
preferences. Will look again. I've heard a lot of good things about these
expressive voices. Thus far, I have tried Allison and Susan, and I prefer
Samantha on my i-devices and, of course, Alex. I also prefer the Russian voice
on my iPad to the ones available on the Mac. But I don't think Apple is going
to care much what I prefer. smile

Re: voice changes after mavericks upgrade

2014-04-27 Thread Mary Otten
Thanks, Shawn. I don't know why, perhaps because voice over is on? But when I
went into finder as you described, and down to the individual voice folders,
the system isn't letting me delete. I get the ding when I try to do that. Even
opening a folder and then a subfolder within that folder, e.g. Samantha, and
trying to get rid of an individual file, gives me the ding. There must be some
setting I have to change somewhere to enable deletions? Wasn't there some
change in mountain lion or lion that restricted user access to some folders
that had been accessible under earlier versions of osX?

I am not one who feels particularly comfortable messing in the guts of the
system. But deleting various voices that I'm not using or can't use seems
harmless enough if I could just get it to work.

Well, thanks, Anne. At least it isn't me, and I'm not crazy. I was really
surprised about Samantha, because she is the U.S. English voice for IOS still,
and Milena is the Russian voice for IOS. Go figure. Honestly, my real hope, and
I am not holding my breath for it, is that the Ivona tts will become available.
Their Russian voice is wonderful! Best I've heard for a Russian voice that is
available as a tts for screen readers.

But it is only in Windows at this point.

Yes. Mavericks uses the new Vocalizer Expressive engine so the old voices that

voice changes after mavericks upgrade

2014-04-25 Thread Mary Otten
Hi all,

This machine had Mountain Lion, and I had installed some extra voices,
Samantha, Tom and the Russian Milena, along with Jill, I think. Now, with
Mavericks, although those 1st three I mentioned are listed as possible voices,
they seem to have disappeared, and others are available. In the text to speech
tab of the speech and dictation preference pane, once I downloaded the new
voices, it looks like the ones like Milena for sure, and I think maybe Tom and
Samantha, have disappeared now. But they still show up in my voice over
listings. Does anybody know what's up with that? Can I get these voices back,
and if not, how do I get them out of my voice over choices?
