As Canadian you might look at ACE (Advanced Cartographic Environment) of PCI
(www.pcigeomatics.com). ACE can read MIF/MID and in near future, with PCI Geomatica as
well TAB.

can not possibly replace old good MapInfo. It's rather an extremely
powerful GIS / spatial <> add-on to MapInfo (as well as to
ArcView etc.). And their 3d visualisation stuff is cool too.
