MI Orthorectification on Mapinfo?

2000-03-14 Thread Kazuhiko Yamashita

Hi Subscribers,

I am making time series coastal erosion maps of northern coast of
Fukuoka prefecture, Japan.
I have got many aerial photos taken in 1947, 1961, 1966, 1975, 1982,
1990 and 1995.
I scanned them all with hi DPI and registered them as raster maps.
But they are distorted and cannot be overlaid with high accuracy.
I have to calculate anual erosion rates after tide level adjustment.

Does anyone know any good and inexpensive ORTHO tools for that purpose?
It is not necessary to be super accurate.

Thanks in advance,
Hiko

MI - Min/Max date per ID

2000-03-14 Thread Tom Manson

Dearest MapInfo users,

I have a problem that's been plaguing me for a few days now. I have a table
with two columns, one containing an ID and the other a date. Most of the IDs
appear more than once, with different dates each time. What I need to find
out is the earliest and latest date for each ID. From this I will then be
able to find out the time/date difference between the two dates (if
applicable). Is this possible in MapInfo, or am I going to have to export
the data to Access/Excel?

Many thanks in advance,

Tom

MI Saving dot density layout as other format

2000-03-14 Thread Steven . Ward

I am trying to save a layout of a dot density thematic map using the 'save
window as ...' command for use in other office applications. Usually I use
.wmf format to do this, however with this particular map, when I import it
into other applications, the dots appear to have disappeared. This map
will print out from Mapinfo fine. I have saved it as all other formats and
the dots are fine, but quality and file size suffer. Has anyone else
experienced this problem/got any suggestions?

Cheers

RE: MI Uncombine polygons

2000-03-14 Thread Ian Foe

Claes,

To uncombine objects I use a free tool called PolyPlus that can be found at
Directions Magazine at
http://www.directionsmag.com/tools/Default.asp?a=catdetailstitle=id=10ProductID=orderby=Page=15Pagesize=10

This tool is simple to use - just select an object or the whole table and
press the uncombine button. It has saved me hours of work.

Cheers,
Ian.

It is easy to combine polygons, for example a group of islands, to a region
in Mapinfo.
But how to split them again to individual polygons using a field in the
database.
I know how to divide them graphically, but I need to do it in one stroke.
I.E the opposite of "Combine objects by Column".
The only way I found out is to export them ti MIF and edit the MIF/MID
files.
Not very fun i you have many polygon groups.

Hi Users

I generate a grid file quite big. each grid-cell is 1 ha area and the final
file size is about 200 Mb with approx. 47 records. I am using MI 4.5 and

15 min to display? Is there any thing else that could be done to improve the

MI - SUM - Min/Max date per ID

2000-03-14 Thread Tom Manson

List,

The solution that I finally used was from Peter who suggested the following
(as did others):

"Your query can be done by using the following SQL statement
(assuming the columns are called ID and Date) :

Select Columns  : ID, Count(*), Min(Date), Max(Date)
From Table  :
Where Condition :
Group By Columns: ID

This will return a table with the ID, the number of IDs in each set,
minimum date and maximum date for each ID.

The dates will be in numeric format (mmdd). To convert them
to dates do a "save copy as" of the query, open the table and use
table maintenance to change them to date fields. While you're in
table maintenance, you could also add another field that will
contain the difference between the dates and use the "update
column" command to update the new column with the difference (ie
maximum minus the minimum date)."

Thanks again for everyones assistance,

Tom

Re: MI Lambert Salvador

2000-03-14 Thread Cliff Mugnier - University of New Orleans

Damien,

Presumably the math model in MapInfo is a "Kosher" Lambert Conformal Conic and
is fully conformal. Therefore, it is acceptable for use in El Salvador. Note,
however, it is NOT suitable for use in France for coordinates determined prior
to 1948. That is the year the country of France changed from the old French
Army Truncated Cubic math model to the fully conformal math model which is
probably in MapInfo.

Beware of working in areas and countries that used to be French Colonies. With
the exception of "new" stuff in Algeria (they changed the math model in the 70's
or 80's I think), ALL other foreign French Stuff is the old Truncated Cubic if
it is on the Lambert. (Of course, many other projections have been used also by
the French for large-scale topo and hydro work.)

Don't forget that El Salvador uses one zone but it has two Datums. (Ocotepecque
Datum of 1935 and NAD 1927.) See my column from July 1999 in "Photogrammetric
Engineering and Remote Sensing, or you can download the paper (about neighboring
Honduras), under Grids and Datums stuff from:

MI: SQL help needed

2000-03-14 Thread PERRY Chris

Hi listers,

I'm in need of some help with an SQL query - I just seem to get my head
around it at the moment.

What I have is a table with site numbers listed multiple times and
attributes, eg:
1   Picnic
1   Camping
1   Bushwalking
2   Camping
2   Bird watching
3   Camping
3   Bird watching
3   Abseiling

I want to group all the attributes into one field for each site, eg:
1   Picnic, Camping, Bushwalking
2   Camping, Bird watching
3   Camping, Bird watching, Abseiling

Can someone help with an SQL to do this?

Every once in a while, I'll try to open mail from a few of you that will crash my

As near as I've been able to determine so far, when it happens, it is when a larger

Steven,

I check that feature (that I have to use soon quite a lot) and the WMF dot

But that is true only for a mapper export. Because you are right, the dot

RE: MI preformance

2000-03-14 Thread Bruce Blais

The best thing you can do for yourself in dealing with large databases is to
use fast processors (500 MHz and above), as much RAM as you can get into the
box, and the fastest widest SCSI hard drives you can afford.

As far as using UNIX, the current Pentiums are as fast as a comparable Sun
and I believe the last UNIX version of MI was version 4. I recommend putting

it has little to do with mapinfo. I have a text file that has about 20
million pieces of data (35 lines with each line being 600 characters
long). It takes about 5 minutes to open it up and even longer to save it
 I
have only a single program that can even open that file). The problem is in
transmitting the data to and from disk. I suspect that your file has much
more than 47 actual records.

Re: MI MapXtreme Java - Thematic Mapping

2000-03-14 Thread Gary Schwartz

Mark,

There doesn't appear to be any Individual Values thematic "out of the box", but
it can be done in a round-about sort of way using the IDSelectionTheme
interface. The basic approach is a two-step process:

Step 1: Create a recordset using a Group By on the column you want to create
the individual values theme on.

Step 2: For each record in the recordset, create a recordset for all records
in your table that have the same value of your column. Create a new
IDSelectionTheme object for all of the features in this recordset.

Here's some sample code that I've just been working on. It connects to an
Oracle database to get the data (it's using point data):

  private void applyIndividualRenditions(Layer layer, String table,
String column, String whereColumn, String whereValue)
  {
try
{
DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());
conn = DriverManager.getConnection(
"jdbc:oracle:thin:@charon:1521:ORCL1","SYSTEM","manager");
Statement statement = conn.createStatement();

//get all of the individual values from the table
ResultSet rs = statement.executeQuery(
"select " + column + " from " + table +
" where " + whereColumn + "='" + whereValue + "' " +
" group by " + column);

//loop through each individual value
while(rs.next())
{
//create the theme using the value from the recordset as the name
IDSelectionTheme theme = new
IDSelectionTheme(rs.getString(column));
PrimaryKey pkey;

//get all features that have the current value for the column
FeatureSet feats = layer.searchByAttribute(null, column,
new Attribute(rs.getString(column)), null);

Feature f = feats.getNextFeature();

//create a random color for the symbol
Rendition rend = new Rendition();
int r, g, b;
r = (int)(Math.random() * 255);
g = (int)(Math.random() * 255);
b = (int)(Math.random() * 255);
Color c = new Color(r, g, b);
rend.setValue(rend.SYMBOL_COLOR, c);

//add each feature in the featureset to the theme
while(f != null)
{
pkey = f.getPrimaryKey();
theme.add(pkey, rend);
f = feats.getNextFeature();
}
layer.getThemeList().add(theme);
}
rs.close();
}
catch (Exception e)
{
e.printStackTrace();
}
  }

We have experienced this problems... And didn't find a solution. For this
reason, we construct an individual value thematic by ourself. We scan the
attributes and construct an IDSelectionTheme by assigning an override
feature for each feature, and finally save this theme.. But for version 2 im
not sure, that was not possible in version 1 but with the version 2 we
didn't see exactly if it's now possible...

Subject: MI MapXtreme Java - Thematic Mapping

Hi All,

I know that there are not many MapXtreme experts out there, but if anyone
can help I would appreciate it. So far I have worked through all the
examples, and can Thematically Map my own data. BUT... I can only Map BY
RANGE. Is it possible using MapXtreme Java V2 to map by individual values,
or set the ranges manually? The CreateRangedTheme method only appears to
allow 3 different variations (EQUAL_RANGE, EQUAL_NUM and STANDARD_DEV).
Reading the documentation (what little is provided) there appears a way to
use the BIN methods to change ranges, BUT HOW???

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks
