It may or may not be pure security theatre (personally, I’d tend to agree

Also, I’d say that any perceived extra security by not having this info in the
response is not really security, just security theatre.
Keep it in.

Hi Steve,
Removing it from WFS responses etc. could make it easier to diff results, but
I'd prefer leaving it in.
I'd prefer it if the version info was returned for an empty MapServer request
rather than the cryptic (for new users):
"mapserv(): Web application error. Traditional BROWSE mode

This is one of the first steps as a user, checking what is actually supported
by MapServer, in your installation. Remember that most do not build MapServer

I would suggest keeping at least the version somewhere in the responses
(i.e. current behaviour, or
move to an HTTP header). For scenarios where users do not have access to
the deployment environment,
this information is critical.

In fact this version output I'd argue is one of the most used

Hi,
Do you mean the comment line in the WMS and WFS 1.0.0 GetCapabilities that is
not included

What do folks think about dropping the version
That is how I find out what version IT found and compiled to set up the server.
And what they included.
This was on a Red Hat server which I don’t use and they didn’t want Ubuntu.
Is there another way to check version, etc?

I have always found it very handy, it's the first thing I look at when
asked to troubleshoot someone's server. Perhaps the supported modules
make less sense today since the list is not complete, but I'd vote to
keep at least the MapServer signature and version number. It is common
practice for
What do folks think about dropping the version output from MapServer? That
is, output like:
I'm not sure that advertising version and supported components makes sense
anymore. Might be able to make it tunable via the config file but I'm not
sure that's even necessary.
