[Marxism] Fw: APOLOGY from Australians for Palestine for using images of Syrian children

2014-08-27 Thread Michael Karadjis via Marxism

==
Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message.

Below is the apology from Sonja Karkar from Australians for Palestine
for inadvertently using a picture of Syrian children gassed to death in
their sleep last year by Assad's chemical genocide to demonstrate the
Zionist regime's mass killing of children in Gaza.

Anyone who has seen the Australian this morning saw the horrible slander
job done by Murdoch and the Zionist lobby against Sonja and AFP. I am
certain that this was just an honest mistake and Sonja, an extremely
dedicated person, had no intention of causing harm to either the
Palestinian or Syrian people by using this image.

I am a little disappointed, because I recognised the image as wring
immediately, told Sonja, and she responded and thanked me and said it
had already been pointed out and a correction will be made. She
acknowledges that the error had been pointed out in her apology and says
that "Events overtook me and the correction email was never sent to our
lists." Again this is entirely believable. But the damage is terrible.

There are thousands of genuine images of massacred children from Gaza to
use. Unfortunately, the Internet has been full of images of Syrian
children massacred by the Assad regime being posted as images of Gaza
(or as images of ISIS killings, or killings by Syrian rebel forces).
Whoever is doing this on this larger scale I believe are not simply
careless, but malicious. Their intent is to cause this kind of damage.
Anyone can make an honest mistake, like AFP's, with one image, but no
one without malicious intent posts around dozens of pictures of
different conflicts and pretends they are from another one. This is done
precisely in order to trap unsuspecting activists, and the enormous
proliferation of this garbage is the reason why it was easy for AFP to
fall into this trap.

Anybody looking for images from Gaza needs to be on full alert and check
any image via google images before sending it out. The proportion of
bullshit images out there right now is sensational.

Subject: APOLOGY

APOLOGY
The Australian newspaper has made a scurrilous attempt today with the
help of a Liberal MP Mr Luke Simpkins to suggest that Australians for
Palestine was taking advantage of tragic child victims in Syria to blame
Israel for atrocities committed in Gaza.

In an earlier posting (10 August) to our email lists, I inadvertently
used an image of dead children in Syria when I was intending to show
children killed by Israel in Gaza. Palestinian Haitham Sabbah from the
Sabbah Report pointed out the error.

I apologised to the handful of others who also noticed and I apologise
to everyone else now. Events overtook me and the correction email was
never sent to our lists. There was no intention to deceive as is clear
from my immediate response to Mr Simpkins.

It was the picture that was wrong, not the report about Israel’s
slaughter of Palestinian children. Suffice to say that there are
umpteen images showing life and limb ripped from the innocents in Gaza.
They are readily available on the internet. There is no need now to
show them here.

Children slaughtered anywhere is cause for grief. Most people do not
want to see the horrific images. However, when people are being
bombarded as the Palestinians certainly were by Israeli bombs, we need
to report on the outrages as best we can.

Those who wish to make mileage out of some wrong images being used
cannot negate the realities on the ground. They are well documented in
the media, medical teams working in Gaza and organisations like UNRWA
and Amnesty International, amongst others. The statistics alone speak
for the horrors and devastation that Israel has caused.

We make no apology for reporting these crimes against a besieged and
oppressed people. The world must know and Israel must be held
accountable.

Whatever value there is in this treatise, it is severely undermined by
formulations such as this:

->Finally we have the only consistent Marxist and revolutionary current,
the Proletarian Internationalists to which

the RCIT belongs. As Bolshevik-Communists they distinguish
themselves from the other currents in their recognition
of the imperialist character not only of the Western
powers but also of Russia and China. From this they conclude
that a consistent and intransigent approach against
all these powers, one based on the Bolshevik’s program
of “revolutionary defeatism,” is imperative for the workers’
movement.<-

Even if you believe it, you only appear foolish by stating it. I
consider myself the world's leading Marxist comedian but would not be
caught dead saying it. (Forget I just said that.)

That was true on most American military bases until a few weeks before
September 11, 2001. (Cue conspiracy theorists here.)

Did you listen to the interview with Vijay?

Jon Flanders

But the second reason I was opposed to U.S. andNATOforce was that by the
time the Americans started talking about intervening, a third of Libya
was out of Mr. Gaddafi’s hands. And I’ll give you a sense of this. If
you traveled to Libya, Egypt and Syria prior to the Arab Spring, you
would find something interesting. In Libya, since 1987, the military has
been a wreck. There’s no morale. You know, you could walk in and out of
a base without being asked questions. In other words, their military was
a shambles. When Gaddafi’s son visited Benghazi a week into the
rebellion, he came running back to Tripoli and said, you know, "Papa,
it’s over. We’ve lost Benghazi." You know, they essentially ceded that
part of the country. Libya was going—Gaddafi’s rule was going to fall.
There was no need forNATOintervention. In Egypt, the military is very
powerful, but you will find something interesting. The soldiers have
dark skin compared to the other Egyptians. They are recruited from upper
Egypt. They are very disciplined, but they are not exactly with high
morale. In Syria, the military has very high morale. You know, it has
often been amazing to me. I keep wondering, why did the Turks and others
believe that the Syrian regime was going to fall like the Libyan regime?
They have completely different military structures, and the morale is
completely different.

So, the second reason I opposed intervention in Libya was it was
inevitable that Gaddafi was going to lose power. Let the process take
its own way. Let them fight a little bit. Let there be a political
dialogue within the rebellion. Let them create alternative structures of
power. If you just give the Libyan people a destroyed country, how are
they going to build a future? And that was the real danger of aerial
bombardment of the style the Americans conduct. They level countries and
then tell people, "Well, create a democracy." It doesn’t work like that.
If the Libyans had been given three, four, eight months to fight against
Gaddafi, already much weakened, I think a different outcome might have
been possible.

Sheikha Mozah spent her youth in Bengazi. Among other things Mahmoud Jibril
work as a financial consultant in a number of Arab countries. For how long
did he manage Sheikha Mozah's financial assets?

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmoud_Jibril

He joined the NTC on March 5, 2011 and was its executive chair till Oct 23,
2011. So when did he fly in on a NATO aircraft? Who else do you say flew in
on NATO aircraft. Please provide verifiable details.

Also you take a position on the state that I find very
counter-revolutionary even while it is true:

What to say about Libya? I mean, again, you know, it’s the slogan that I’ve
> been trying to promote, which is, you can build a state—it takes you a
> hundred years; you destroy it in an afternoon.

Actually Qaddafi was able to build a very corrupt, very brutal fascist
state that settled tribal disputes with helicopter gunships, and stranded
ten of thousand of African immigrates in the dessert to die, in less than
40 years, but the point is taken. It is much easier to destroy than to
build in general and this also applies to the state. To me, that means
maybe we should cut the Libyan revolution some slack if they don't have a
well formed state and everything hunky-dory after 3 years. To me it means
that the real work of revolution just begins once the old state has been
overthrown.

Does it mean to you that the state shouldn't be overthrown and that the
Qaddafi regime should have been allowed to "perfect" its Green Book based
state for at least another 60 years?

Someone called Anas writes to let me know that Jabhat an-Nusra should be
translated as “Victory” and not "Support” Front.

Seems like Clay Clairborne agrees that I have made an error.

The word in question is Nusra. Some of you might know the name Nusrat, meaning
Aid or Assistance. Not Victory.

Some people do call JaN the Victory Front, but that seems less literal and more
elegiac.

Pick your translation. The point remains. It was set up, as I learned first
hand from JaN, as the “support front” by the Islamic State of Iraq in January
2012 to fight in Syria.

Very best, Vijay.
