I hope my remarks shed some light on the psychology of racism.
Some time after I was ten years old my father brought home taped music on a
reel to reel tape. So sometime after 1955. I must have heard that tape many
times, because those songs have stayed with me for decades.
They were cloyingly sentimental songs sung by white men about black men. At
least that was my impression at the time.

Looking back after all this time I see two things in these songs. One was an
inclination for southern whites to tell the world they actually viewed blacks
with kindness.
“Some of my best friends are Negros.”
I think our church was a transmission belt for this message.
And secondly, they did not want to see themselves as bad or hateful people.
They needed to convince themselves of their kindly feelings towards black
people.
Or at least some of them felt that need.

This version is by Paul Robeson and not the version I recall from decades ago.
He has altered the words.

This could be the one I remember.

Wanchoo on Smith, ed., _Modern Empires_

A huge body of literature has grown around the theme of empires and
it is no easy task to put together a volume that covers over five
centuries of the history of empires across the world. Bonnie Smith
has selected extracts from the pronouncements of empire builders as
well as the responses of those who experienced the consequences,
whether as leaders, slaves, soldiers, women, or subalterns.
Inevitably, any selection of extracts will leave many area
specialists disappointed. But for those interested in a global
perspective this collection is a very valuable introduction.

The principal virtue of this book is that it presents an eclectic
selection that can be used by undergraduates and their teachers with
widely varying ideological perspectives. The twelve chapters of this
book are chronologically arranged but the chapters themselves are
organized on the basis of the dominant feature of the period. The
introductions to the chapters and the headnotes before each extract
provide the basic background for understanding the text that follows.
The author has critiqued the greed and ambitions of the empire
builders and more traditional Eurocentric views of empire;
highlighted violence, plunder, and exploitation by the imperial
powers; and incorporated women's viewpoints.

Tracking the emergence of empires since 1450, Smith has identified
the Ottomans, Mongols, Russians, and Chinese in Asia; the Portuguese,
Spanish, and Americans in the New World; and the British, French and
other European powers in Asia and Africa. Modern world history has
been shaped by the rise and fall of these empires as much as by
industrialization and the rise of nation-states. She has tried to
capture the "unfolding history of interactions" (p. 10) among peoples
across the world using well-crafted headnotes before each extract.
She shows how empires have contributed to globalization, migrations,
and the movement of goods and ideas across the world, but more
extracts are needed to give the reader a stronger sense of these
worldwide interactions and interconnections.

Some extracts from the work of economists and economic historians
could be added to bolster frequent references to the economic
exploitation by imperial powers. A valuable collection of extracts
can be found in a book by Kenneth Pomeranz and Steven Topik (_The
World that Trade Created: Society, Culture and the World Economy,
1400 to the Present_, 2006). Alternatively, the author could write
separate comments, longer than the headnotes, on the maps in the
book. These could be on the enslavement of Africans (map 3) and on
the movement of commodities like sugar, cotton, and silver (maps 4,
7, and 9). Would it make sense to include extracts from Pomeranz on
the great divergence and Sanjay Subrahmanyam on connected histories?
Although Adam Smith was unable to foresee the benefits or misfortunes
accruing from the discovery of America and the sea route to India, he
thought that the "general tendency would seem to be beneficial" (p.
160). The economics of empire--discussions of the costs and benefits
of empire in the imperial centers as well as the economic critique of
imperial exploitation in the periphery--deserve greater attention,
even in a general history of empire.

There are extracts from imperialists like Bernal Diaz del Castillo,
Robert Clive, and Commodore Perry. Castillo, who took part in the
conquest of Mexico between 1519 and 1521, wrote about the Aztec
emperor Monteczuma and Malinche, who aided the Spanish in their
conquests. A reference to Stephen Greenblatt's discussion of the
conquest of Mexico and the role of Malinche or Dona Marina could be
made in the headnote (_Marvelous Possessions: The Wonder of the New
World_, 1992). In general, the headnotes could refer to well-known
works to help the reader in further research. The observations of
Bartolomo de Las Casas could be introduced by referring to Walter
Mignolo's work (_Local Histories/Global Designs_, 2012).

Although the bibliography at the end of the book is helpful some of
the arguments of these books could be incorporated in the headnotes
quite profitably. The Inca Empire gets a testimonial from Pedro de
Cieza de Leon, who recorded with

A broken clock is right twice a day. Say what you will (and which incidentally
is perhaps correct about the source), the fact is that the Left can’t get it’s

As I understand it, the Integrity Initiative was responsible for a
"false flag" incident in which the novichok used to nearly kill the
Skirpals was actually made in Porton Downs, a British military lab,
rather than in Russia.

It was necessary, according to Moon of Alabama, Tim Hayward, and Craig
Murray, to poison the Skirpals in order to build a case against Russia
so that the Conservative government of Teresa May could promote a new
Cold War against Russia.

I don't know quite how to put this but this is 9/11 Trutherism type
analysis. Remember how the CIA-organized attack on the WTC and the
Pentagon was needed to give the USA an excuse to invade Iraq? It makes
perfect sense for Tim Hayward to be a key figure in all this since the
pro-Assad group he has organized includes Mark Crispin Miller, the batty
NYU professor who is a die-hard Truther.

May didn't need to poison anybody in order to heighten tensions against
Russia. That is like busting down an open door. I am all for Anonymous

clip - Working-class people often get blamed for their troubles. They
should have planned better, been less demanding, or just been smarter.
Those are just some of the judgments that surfaced again in the weeks after
General Motors’ announcement late in November that it would close five
plants in the U.S. and Canada, leaving thousands of workers without jobs.

Those who suggest that people should simply leave these communities have
also not been paying attention. People have been leaving these areas for
decades, starting during the early 1980s when the steel industry closed
dozens of plants. As Dale Maharidge and Michael Williamson noted in their
1985 book, *Journey to Nowhere: The Saga of the New Underclass,
*deindustrialized
spurred a significant migration of industrial workers, many headed to
places like Houston in search of new jobs in the oil industry. Since 1970,
Youngstown’s population has dropped by about 85,000 people. Trumbull County
next door, where the Lordstown plant operates, lost about 30,000 people.

Given the long-term economic struggles of the region, we might expect those
numbers to be higher, but many people stayed despite the area’s limited
opportunities. Why? Because along with deep roots, they have friends and
family who help each other get by in hard times, and a poor economy keeps
the cost of living low. For many, their most significant economic assets –
their homes – are not portable or worth enough to make selling worthwhile.
In the Mahoning Valley, people can often get by on part-time jobs and the
informal economy of barter and DIY.

The ruling BJP in India and its parental Fascist outfit RSS,  have been on an
ideological overdrive since 2014 when they came to power.
Their pet theory was that Hinduism was the dominating world religion for the
last 50 thousand years or 100 thousand years as you please.
Lord Ram had ruled the whole globe for 10 thousand years and his ruling period
was the golden age of the world, unsurpassed since then.
India is the land where Aryans had emerged and they had spread throughout the
world, educating the barbarians. (It does not matter that latest genetic
research by many labs, including the Harvard Medical School had ruled out any
major migrations out of India, thousands of years ago. RSS had declared that
Western science and especially genetic research is fake and only the genetics
propounded in the Vedas (?) is authentic).
India had flying machines, intergalactic travel and nuclear weapons since
antiquity. The technology was stolen by the West and they had built rockets and
atom bombs (they quote Oppenheimer to assert this).
Ancient India had test tube babies and plastic surgery. A baby elephant's head
was transplanted on Ganesha using plastic surgery. This , according to them is
the indisputable proof. Modi himself had asserted in a previous Indian Science
Congress, inviting ridicule and scorn from Indians and the world scientific
community.
A minister in Modi's cabinet had claimed that Darwin's theory is wrong as no one, not
even his grandfather had ever seen men emerging out of monkeys. He had confidently
declared that Darwin is wrong! And he says that the Holy Vedas had declared so. Queried
by journalists to reveal which stanza of Rigveda or any other Holy book mentions this
fact, he thundered, "it is for you, ignorant fellows to find that out!"
Another state chief minister had declared that pen drives were found in
archaeological ruins. His proof: there is a boulder with a protrusion that
vaguely resembles as USB port. His claim is that ancient India had super
computers (take it with a pinch of salt: with boulder sized USB drives).
A prominent Indian scientist, Prof. Jayant Narlikar, who was a student of Fred Hoyle
asked the Hindu fanatics to show him proof that Ancient India had knowledge of
electro-magnets, without which neither atom bombs, nor space ships nor computers are
possible. There was no answer from these "learned men."
One might brush off these rantings as religious fanaticism, but there is a
clear political agenda behind all this.
By declaring that Hindu religion is tens of thousands of years old, they deny
that the Indus Civilisation is non-Aryan. All Indians are descendants of Aryan
races and the existence of Dravidians is a myth propagated by the West.
According to them, BJP and RSS are the torch bearers of HINDUTVA or the essence
of Hinduism. Since Aryans and their Vedic Religion are  born here in India, all
other religions are imports from outside. So India is the land of Hindus and
others have to either convert to Hinduism or face expulsion from the country.
This has successfully rallied many Hindus, believing that RSS and BJP will
bring back the past glory of Hinduism. This trump card, they try to use every
time the country faces an election.
Modi had brought down India economy to new lows during his tenure. His Currency
withdrawal, Goods and Services Tax etc, have damaged the economy. Nearly 12.5
million jobs are lost with the economy in slump. His open corruption in the
case of buying of French Jets (the Rafale) had caused considerable damage to
his claim that he is running a corruption free administration. The details of
the defence deal reveal that his close associates were benefited to the extent
of hundreds of millions of Indian Rupees.
Indian farmers are on a warpath with agriculture getting impossible for
millions of poor farmers across the country. nearly 350 thousand farmers had
committed suicides by drinking pesticides, finding no way to pay off their
debts.
There was enough proof that many businessmen close to Modi had cheated the
Indian Government Banks to the tune of billions of Rupees and some of escaped
out of the country.Modi promised 20 million new jobs every

India had flying machines, intergalactic travel and nuclear weapons since
antiquity. The technology was stolen by the West and they had built rockets and
atom bombs (they quote Oppenheimer to assert this).
Ancient India had test tube babies and plastic surgery. A baby elephant's head
was transplanted on Ganesha using plastic surgery. This , according to them is
the indisputable proof. Modi himself had asserted in a previous Indian Science
Congress, inviting ridicule and scorn from Indians and the world scientific
community.
A minister in Modi's cabinet had claimed that Darwin's theory is wrong as no
one, not even his grandfather had ever seen men emerging out of monkeys. He had
confidently declared that Darwin is wrong! And he says that the Holy Vedas had
declared so. Queried by journalists to reveal which stanza of Rigveda or any
other Holy book mentions this fact, he thundered, "it is for you, ignorant
fellows to find that out!"
Jayant Narlikar, who was a student of Fred
Hoyle asked the Hindu fanatics to show him proof that Ancient India had
knowledge of electro-magnets, without which neither atom bombs, nor space ships
nor computers are possible.
Indian farmers are on a warpath with agriculture getting impossible for
millions of poor farmers across the country. nearly 350 thousand farmers had
committed suicides by drinking pesticides, finding no way to pay off their
debts.
There was enough proof that many businessmen close to Modi had cheated the
Indian Government Banks to the tune of billions of Rupees and some of escaped
out of the country.Modi promised 20 million new jobs every year, but the
employment potential in the country is showing a consistent negative trend.
Unemployment is at an alarming high.
In this background, the best weapon available to the Hindu supremacists is to
create and circulate concocted stories about the glory of Hinduism and thus
garner the votes of 84% of the electorate, who are Hindus. But it is to be seen
whether religion is stronger than hunger.
Modi's ruling BJP had faced humiliating de

And Theodor Adorno was right to insist that he was not “a poet of the
Judaic homeland”. Indeed, one of the themes running throughout Benjamin
Balint’s fascinating and forensically scrupulous account of the history
of Kafka’s papers is the writer’s deeply ambiguous relationship – if it
can even be called that – with Israel, or, as it still was in his time,
Palestine. While Brod, a typical Mitteleuropean man of letters, “came,”
according to the journalist and Zionist Robert Weltsch, “to complete
identification with the Jewish people”, Kafka maintained a sceptical
attitude on the “Jewish question”, both in the personal and the public
spheres. “What have I in common with the Jews?” he asks in his diary,
adding with typically lugubrious humour, “I have hardly anything in
common with myself.”
