[Marxism] In Christchurch, Signs Point to a Gunman Steeped in Internet Trolling

NY Times, March 15, 2019
In Christchurch, Signs Point to a Gunman Steeped in Internet Trolling
By Daniel Victor

A camera mounted to his head, the gunman who livestreamed part of his
savage attack on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, on Friday
began his video by casually making reference to a current internet meme.

He appeared to be steeped in the culture of the extreme-right internet.
And in the terrible minutes of video that followed, he proved to be a
nonchalant, unrepentant killer.

As of Friday night, the gunman had not been identified by the
authorities. But just before the attack began, a man who said he was a
28-year-old from Australia published a link on a right-wing forum to a
74-page manifesto, and another link on the same forum to a personal
Facebook page with the video that would soon document the slaughter.

Based on the video, the manifesto and social media posts, a picture has
begun to emerge of a man primarily driven by white nationalism and a
desire to drive cultural, political and racial wedges between people
across the globe. That, he hoped, would stoke discord and, eventually,
more violence between races.

It is unclear whether the Facebook user is the man whom the authorities
in New Zealand have charged in the shootings that have left at least 49
people dead. They have said only that the suspect is a man in his 20s.

Australia’s main public broadcaster reported that the Facebook user
worked as a personal trainer at a gym in the city of Grafton after
finishing school in 2009 until 2011, when he left to travel overseas.
Where exactly his travels took him was not immediately known, but the
manifesto’s author wrote that he explored much of Europe in the spring
of 2017.

And a man using the same name visited the Gilgit-Baltistan
administrative territory of Pakistan in October, people at two hotels
there confirmed.

Asghar Khan, the manager of operations at the Serena Hotel there, said
the man seemed like a “nature-loving” traveler. Syed Israr Hussain,
owner of the nearby Osho Thang hotel, said he stayed there for two or
three days with a group of backpackers.

“He was normal and polite during his stay,” Mr. Hussain said. “There was
nothing out of the ordinary.”

The gunman appeared to pair the shooting with the typical trolling
tactics of the internet’s most far-right instigators, playing to a
community of like-minded supporters online who cheered him on in real
time as they watched bodies pile up. And the manifesto states plainly
what usually goes unstated by internet trolls: By design, its author
wanted to get everyone upset and arguing with each other.

[Follow our live briefing on the Christchurch killings here.]

One of the goals of his bloodshed, he wrote, was to “agitate the
political enemies of my people into action, to cause them to overextend
their own hand and experience the eventual and inevitable backlash as a
result.” He said he wanted to “incite violence, retaliation and further
divide.”

The manifesto, the harrowing video and what appear to be the gunman’s
social media posts feature typical white nationalist rhetoric with
layers upon layers of irony and meta jokes, making it difficult to parse
what is genuine and what he just thought was funny.

The gunman seems to have a significant interest in history — at least,
the parts that fit into a white nationalist narrative. On his weapons,
he wrote the names of centuries-old military leaders who led battles
against largely nonwhite forces, along with the names of men who
recently carried out mass shootings of Jews and Muslims.

The manifesto, steeped in anti-Muslim sentiment, refers to nonwhites as
“invaders” who threaten to “replace” white people. The author says he
used guns instead of other weapons because he wanted the United States
to tear itself apart arguing over gun laws.

His choice of language, and the specific memes he referred to, suggest a
deep connection to the far-right online community. The link to the
livestreamed video was first posted to the /pol/ forum of 8chan, a
notorious far-right space, where the gunman was hailed as a hero after
the shooting.

Some of his references were subtle. As he drove to the mosque, he
listened to a song associated with a 1995 Serbian nationalist video,
which has recently been co-opted as a racist meme.

What might appear to be a bizarre, rambling section of the manifesto was

It is total nonsense.

I won't waste time with the details but it is a bogus complaint filed by a
right-wing group sponsored by Trump supporters. They're taking aim at the
leadership of Justice Democrats, a liberal-leaning organization that pushes
progressive Dems to run against incumbents.

NY Times Op-Ed, March 15, 2019
The Puzzle of Cheap Billionaires
By Jennifer Weiner

I’ve been thinking lately about one of my relatives, now of blessed
memory. This woman was gracious and kind. Her clothes and makeup were
always impeccable; her home was well decorated and welcoming. When you
went over for tea, the cups would be porcelain, and the utensils would
be sterling silver. The sweetener would come in white paper packets,
embossed with the Golden Arches, most likely pilfered from the nearby
McDonald’s where she and her girls would go for coffee, and woe betide
the server who failed to offer them the senior discount.

This was a woman who could afford to buy a bag of sugar. But she
wouldn’t dream of it. Maybe it was Depression-era thrift, or maybe it
was the tiny thrill of a tiny theft, the minute dopamine rush you get
when you do something that isn’t exactly stealing but isn’t entirely
legitimate either.

Her quirk was far from unique. We’ve all seen (or maybe even carried)
pocketbooks full of stolen Sweet’N Low or used a guest bathroom where
the towels were Egyptian cotton, the countertops were Carrara marble and
the soap was a tiny rectangle from a Holiday Inn Express.

The rich are different. Some of them drop six figures to get their
children into a college where they didn’t earn a spot.

And some of them seem to be cheap about the weirdest things. There’s our
president, who likes to brag about his tremendous fortune and who has
twice served an assortment of fast food to championship college football
players who came to call. Maybe Mr. Trump, a fast-food aficionado
himself, believed that the spread was exactly what the athletes wanted.
And maybe it was.

But we know that Mr. Trump has bragged about underpaying contractors who
he has said have done shoddy work and has cut workers’ benefits and
salaries, being cheap in a way that causes pain and suffering.

We also know that he pretty much lives to troll. So it’s hard for me not
to read the bargain-menu feast as intended, at the very least, to enrage
the libs and, as a bonus, keep costs down, too.

But maybe Mr. Trump’s behavior makes a kind of sense when you put it in
the context of the billionaire thrift-boast, the 0.001 percent variation
on the humblebrag. See, for example, Warren Buffett and his reported $18
haircuts, or how he never pays more than $3.17 for breakfast. Or Jeff
Bezos, letting the world know about his $81,840 annual salary from
Amazon. The Ikea founder, Ingvar Kamprad, flew coach and bought his
clothes at flea markets. Queen Elizabeth II is said to reuse wrapping
paper. Stars in jewels and couture scarf In-N-Out burgers on their way
home from the Oscars.

See? they are saying. Of course we could afford caviar or a fancy car or
a fresh roll of wrapping paper. Fame and fortune haven’t changed us.
Deep down, we’re just like you!

Which brings us to Robert Kraft, a 77-year-old billionaire, Donald Trump
pal, New England Patriots owner and, apparently, a fellow cheap senior.
Last month Mr. Kraft was swept up in a statewide sting operation and
charged with soliciting sex in a South Florida strip mall. Mr. Kraft is
an undisputed billionaire. If he wants to pay for sex, he could hire the
most discreet, professional escorts. If it had to be sex with someone at
a strip mall, he could have probably bought the entire strip mall — nail
salon, Outback Steakhouse and all.

But according to the prosecutors, that’s not what happened. Instead,
they say, for two days in a row he visited a seedy-looking storefront
called Orchids of Asia Spa, where he spent less than 20 minutes per
visit and paid between $100 and $200 for these encounters, one of which
involved oral sex, with women who were, according to the police,
prisoners, brought over from China with the promise of legitimate jobs.

These women’s lives sound miserable. They were flown to America. Many
were routed through Flushing, Queens, then dispatched to spas all over
the country. They would work up to 14-hour days, seven days a week,
cooking their meals on hot plates, sleeping on the massage tables, being
moved from business to business, sometimes after they’d surrendered
their passports to their bosses.

Mr. Kraft wasn’t the only superrich guy who was caught up in this
investigation: John Childs, who founded a private equity firm, and John
Havens, the former chief financial officer of Citigroup, were also charged.

Mr. Kraft and Mr. Childs have denied the charges. The police say they
have taped evidence. But the allegations do present this tantalizing
question: If these men are indeed guilty, why are billion

Given the enormity of the drug crisis in the USA, particularly centered
on opioid overdoses that are the largest cause of death of people under
the age of 50, it was inevitable that Hollywood would begin to produce
“problem” movies such as “Ben is Back” and “Beautiful Boy”. It also just
as inevitable that such films would be based on the suffering of
well-to-do families and suffused with clichés.

“Ben is Back” stars Julia Roberts as Holly Burns, the matriarch of a
generally happy family eagerly awaiting Christmas day, the happiest time
of the year, especially if you live in the suburbs and have lots of
money to lavish on presents. Pulling into her driveway with a carload of
gifts to place under the Christmas tree, she sees the ghost of Christmas
past, namely her college-aged son Ben (Lucas Hedges) who has cut short
his stay in a drug rehabilitation facility to return home from the holidays.

The entire family treats Ben as if he was the scariest ghost showing up
in Scrooge’s bedroom. He is there not to remind them of their lifetime
of sins but the pain he has visited on them in the past as an opioid
addict. Hoping to enjoy a happy time with the family, he is put on the
defensive by his mom’s insistence that he take a drug test in the
upstairs bathroom right off the bat. As he pees into a bottle, she
stands behind him with her arms folded to make sure he is not turning in
a fake sample.

The possibility of a nuclear exchange is enhanced by the disparity
between India and Pakistan’s military forces. One does not have to be
Carl von Clausewitz to predict the likely outcome of a conventional war
between a country of 200 million people and a country of 1.3 billion people.

Pakistan reserves the right to use nuclear weapons first. India has a
“no first use” policy, but with so many caveats that it is essentially
meaningless. In brief, it wouldn’t take much to ignite a nuclear war
between them.

If that happens, its effects will not be just regional. According to a
study by the University of Colorado, Rutgers University, and UCLA, if
Pakistan and India exchanged 100 Hiroshima-sized nuclear warheads (15
kilotons), they would not only kill or injure 45 million people, but
also generate enough smoke to plunge the world into a 25-year long
nuclear winter.

Both countries have between 130 and 150 warheads apiece.

Temperatures would drop to Ice Age levels and worldwide rainfall would
decline by 6 percent, triggering major droughts. The Asian Monsoon could
be reduced by between 20 and 80 percent, causing widespread regional
starvation.

The Australian-born suspect who shot dead dozens of Muslim worshippers
in Christchurch, New Zealand, has published a manifesto citing US
President Donald Trump and Anders Breivik, the Norwegian white
supremacist who murdered 77 people in Norway in 2011.

The 74-page dossier by Brenton Tarrant, which has been described by
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison as a "work of hate", praised
Trump as "a symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose".

The 28-year-old, who is now in police custody, also claimed that he had
"brief contact" with Breivik and had received a "blessing" for his
actions from the mass murderer's acquaintances.

Re: [Marxism] New Washington Babylon story follow-up on potential attack on Venezuela

Epstein makes the valid point that we are not seeing the sort of propaganda
campaign in the media that we saw in the build-up to the US invasion of
Iraq. He concludes that that this means an invasion of Venezuela is less
likely. He's right, but he's also not taking into account the complexity of
the situation. In the early 2000's, the mainstream of the US capitalist
class had given themselves over to the neoconservatives. That was why they
installed Bush into the White House. They were more or less united behind
Bush's strategy (if you want to dignify it with that term).

Today, the central fact of US political life is exactly that to a large
degree they have lost control over their executive branch. Policy towards
Venezuela is a perfect example. Last August Trump proposed a US invasion.
His national security advisor - H.R. McMaster - and his secretary of state
- Rex Tillerson - both strongly resisted. These were two of the "adults" in
the administration. They were more representative of the mainstream of the
US capitalist class. And they've been replaced by Mike Pompeo (secretary of
state) and John Bolton (security advisor), throwbacks neoconservatism if
there ever were ones.

The admission of the NY Times that they had it wrong and that it was the
protesters who burned the aid trucks, not Maduro's armed forces, shows that
the representatives of the capitalist mainstream - have major doubts about
an invasion. That's why we're not seeing that propaganda campaign.

As for what's coming out of the White House, Trump is somewhat tied down
fighting against any investigation by either Mueller or congress. That too,
is staying his hand. In the future, though, he could launch an invasion
precisely in order to distract from the investigation.

(By the way, on CNN last night, Katherine Rampell, columnist for the
Washington Post, commented: "What we actually want to know is 'who does he
[Trump] owe money to?' You have to remember, this was a guy who banks
would not lend money to. This was a guy who was buying golf courses in all
cash. If you know anything about real estate transactions, you know this
makes no sense." She was of course referring to Trump's money laundering
operation. Once again, we see that the very logic of the situation is
forcing them ever further down the path of revealing this operation.)
