For those unfamiliar with Omar, he is among the sharpest analysts of the

Hi all,

Just wanted to draw people's attention to the fact that the most recent
edition of the Marxist Left Review is now
online in full. It contains the following pieces, feel free to subscribe or
purchase a copy to support the project.

*Police state: The politics of law and order *
Tom Bramble analyses the factors driving the terrifying growth of the
police state in Australia.

*The political economy of immigration to Australia *
Jordan Humphreys explores the nature of immigration to Australia. By
highlighting its importance to ruling class strategies for economic growth,
he explains how and why the numbers and origins of immigrants have changed
over time.

*The social construction of sectarianism in the Middle East *
Omar Hassan outlines a materialist explanation of sectarian conflict in the
Middle East, arguing that true social liberation is bound up with the
abolition of capitalism in the region.

*The SWAG years: Revolutionary organising in 1970s Australia *
Tess Lee Ack draws together anecdotes and lessons from her involvement in
the founding years of international socialism of 1970s Australia, from
which Socialist Alternative was formed in 1995.

*Review: Genocide in the Kimberley *
Alexis Vassiley reviews an excellent new book describing the brutal
policing of Indigenous peoples in the Kimberley in the late 19th century.

*Review: The making of the Australian working class *
Diane Fieldes reviews a fascinating new work that documents the early
formation of working class consciousness in Australia.

What never ceases to amaze me is that absolute unwillingness of people
putting so much into the building of these groups to learn about previous
failures. It really is a fundamental refutation of the very assumptions of
. . . not just Marxism, but any substantive legacy of the Enlightenment at
all.

The ISO flared into prominence pretty quickly and really occupied the niche
that the SWP/YSA had held for some years earlier. As soon as the group
began claiming a membership of "about 3000," I thought to myself that they
were going to hit the same glass ceiling that blocked the continued growth
of the SWP. I pointed this out. I tried to talk to people in the ISO
about it.

Nobody wanted to hear it because, like good little children of the great
ahistorical American empire, they instinctively saw everything as a one
off. And they made many of the same suicidal mistakes that the SWP did..

The sad thing is that it really didn't have to happen.

Even now, the former members of the ISO who are complaining bitterly about
how the organization failed them (as though it wasn't also the other way
around) just don't want to hear from anybody who challenges them to reach
beyond their posturing and faux rage to a serious analytical discussion.

And that really bodes poorly for the future.

Comradely,
Mark L.

FYI: The ISO has voted to dissolve itself. Socialism 2019 has been
maintained as a broader political event. Haymarket Books (and the
paperback versions of the HM Book Series) is going strong and is
independent from the former organisation. The collaboration between HM
and Haymarket is continuing, unaffected by these events.

Please join us on the #DraftHowie2020 campaign We need Howie Hawkins to
run for president.  Do you agree?

Howie (third from left) campaigns for NY governor in 2018 with Jia Lee,
candidate for NY lieutenant governor

A coalition of active Greens are encouraging Howie Hawkins to run for
the Green Party nomination for president, and we're inviting you to
become part of this effort by *signing onto a letter asking Howie to run*.

*Why Howie?*  To fight the climate emergency, growing inequality, and
endless wars, we need a people’s party independent of the two capitalist
parties, and Howie has the political vision and experience to advance
such a party—*a Green party grounded in an ecosocialist program of
ecological sustainability, economic democracy, and global solidarity
among working people.* He has been active in socialist movements for
decades, working with various organizations and parties that want to
take control of the economy out of the hands of the tiny capitalist
class and place it in the hands of everyday working people.

Howie (left) protests proposed Medicaid cuts during his run for Syracuse
mayor in 2017, with other mayoral candidates.

We believe *Howie is the most qualified person in our entire party to
run*, not only because he was the first person to run on a platform of
the Green New Deal in 2010, not only because he's a co-founder of the
Green Party, but because Howie believes that in order for us to stop the
worst of climate change and achieve economic and racial justice for all,
we need to build a mass movement from below.  We need to build a
political party that is independent of the duopoly, and Howie has the
proven leadership to help get us there.

We have a full statement

for you to read, and if you agree with us, *please follow the links at
the bottom of the letter* to sign on and to make a contribution to the
exploratory committee.

In Solidarity,

Bruce Dixon (GA) and Andrea Mérida Cuéllar (CO)

I have this fossil, and it is like a geo-scope into the deep past, and
into an alien intelligence.

A shallow, warm sea washing over Gondwana. An average marine temperature
of 45 degrees Celsius. Nothing surviving that was not protected from
solar radiation by the cover of water. Lifeless land, supercontinents of
rock and abiotic dust gliding over the planet's surface. Air
temperatures about 14 degrees above the modern average. Not a lick of
ice anywhere. An alien planet to all purposes.

English translation:

On Tuesday, March 19, in the city of Rome, the so-called special envoy for
Venezuela of the USA, Elliot Abrams, and the Vice Chancellor of Russia,
Sergei Ryabkov, met in their own words to make diplomatic consultations on
the political and economic situation. Venezuelan

Subsequently, on Saturday, March 23, two Air Force aircraft of the Russian
Federation arrived at the presidential ramp of Simón Bolívar Airport
located in the town of Maiquetía. Russian aircraft stationed in national
territory are an Antonov An-124 that is used for the transport of military
equipment and an Ilyushin Il-62 that transports passengers. According to
the version of the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria
Zajárova, the hundred Russian military who arrived in our country are
advisers whose task is to conduct a series of meetings to further develop
technical-military cooperation agreements between the governments of
Vladimir Putin and Nicolás Maduro. According to the Russian government,
this military presence is of indefinite duration. This is unacceptable and
we reject it.

The participation of the Russian Vice Chancellor in a meeting with the war
criminal Abrams, who represents the imperialist government of the USA, is a
sample of the degree of interference of both governments in the internal
politics of Venezuela. From the Socialism and Freedom Party (PSL) we assert
that it is not the US and Russian governments that must decide the future
of Venezuela, it is the Venezuelan working people who, with their
mobilization and independent organization, have to take the country out of
the terrible crisis in which was plunged by the economic plundering of
transnational capital, the local bourgeoisie and the government.

The anti-popular government of Nicolás Maduro allows a capitalist power
like Russia, which has its own political and economic objectives, to
simulate a supposed condition of representative of the Venezuelan State in
those spurious negotiations that take place behind the back to the working
people and that are a blatant attempt to decide on the future of the
government, state enterprises and common goods of the country. In turn,
this meeting between the US and Russia is an attempt to negotiate
territorial zones of influence in the world. In that sense, from the PSL we
repudiate their attempt to turn Venezuela into a change sheet on the
diplomatic board of the great imperialist and capitalist powers.

The arrival in the national territory of a hundred Russian soldiers shows
an escalation in Venezuela, and it is evident that their landing in a
civilian airport was for the purpose of quickly disseminating this
information, as a gesture of political support. Since the government of
Hugo Chávez, the Venezuelan state has acquired billions of dollars in
Russian military equipment: Sukhoi fighter jets, Kalashnikov rifles, an air
defense system sustained in MANPADS Igla-S surface-to-air missiles, the
anti-missile S- 300VM and the 4K91 S-125-2M of type Pechora 2M; tanks T-72
and T-90; helicopters Mi-17 and Mi-35, among others. In this way, an
immense military expenditure has been made that even implied a huge
external indebtedness of the Venezuelan State.

The excuse for these purchases of weapons and for the current presence of
Russian military personnel is their dissuasive nature in the face of the
possibility of an armed intervention of the US in the country. The
Socialist Revolutionaries of the PSL repudiate all expressions of Yankee
interference, from oil sanctions to support for the formation of a puppet
government headed by Guaidó and those called for a military coup. But at
the same time we explain that the civic-military government of Maduro does
not defend national sovereignty or independence.
The defense of sovereignty and the repudiation of Yankee and Russian
interference must be organized by the workers and the popular sectors, with
total independence from Maduro and Guaidó.

The alliance of the Russian Federation with the anti-popular government of
Maduro is not gratuitous or simply an expression of political affinities
with the reactionary Putin, who in his country cuts the rights of women,
persecutes the homosexual population, increases the retirement age,
represses and oppresses nationalities like the Chechen people, closes radio
stations and independent television channels, and in Syria is ally of the
dictatorship of Bashar Al-Sad, massacring hundreds of thousands of
civilians in a campaign of scorched
