A Chicken in Every Pot
By William Morris

From Workers’ Tales, a collection of British socialist fairy tales from 
the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, edited by Michael 
Rosen and published last month by Princeton University Press.


In the days before man had completely established his domination over 
the animal world, the poultry of a certain country, unnamed in my 
record, met in solemn conference in the largest hall they could hire for 
their money. The period was serious, for it was dawning near Christmas, 
and the question in the debate partook of the gravity of the times; for, 
in short, various resolutions—the wording of which has not come down to 
us—were to be moved on the all-important subject, With what sauce shall 
we be eaten?


Needless to say that the hall was crowded to suffocation, or that an 
overflow meeting (presided over by working-class leaders) was held on 
the neighboring dunghill.


All went smoothly; the meeting was apparently unanimous and certainly 
enthusiastic, abundant wisdom was poured out on the all-important 
question, and the hearts of all glowed with satisfaction at the progress 
of the race of—poultry. The very bantam hens were made happy by the 
assurance that their claims to cackling were seriously considered.


But when the hands of the clock were pointing to ten minutes to ten, the 
excited audience, as they recovered from the enthusiasm produced by one 
of the great speeches of the evening, saw on the platform beside the 
chairman a battered-looking and middle-aged barn-door cock, who they 
perceived was holding forth in a lugubrious voice, praising the career 
and motives of every advanced politician of the poultry yard. This bored 
the audience a good deal, but, being used to it, they stood it with 
patience for some time, till at last the orator’s voice got rather 
clearer and louder, and he spoke somewhat as follows:


“Sir, I know I have little right to air my own theories [Cheers] after 
the remarkable and clear exposition of the rights of poultry, which has 
been delivered in various ways on this platform tonight [Loud cheers], 
but I am free to confess that one idea has occurred to me that seems to 
have escaped the more educated minds of our leaders tonight [Cries of 
“Oh, Oh”]—and the idea is this!”


Here he stopped dead, and amid ironical cheers tried nervously to help 
himself to water from the long-ago-emptied decanter, then at last 
blurted out in a trembling, shrieking voice not without a suspicion of 
tears in it:


“In short I don’t want to be eaten at all. Is it poss—”

But here a storm of disapproving cries broke out, among which could be 
heard loudest the words “practical politics,” “country franchise,” 
“great liberal party,” “municipal government for—Coxstead!” At last they 
all calmed themselves down into a steady howl, in the midst of which, 
the ragged, middle-aged cock withdrew, apparently not much more 
depressed than when he first stood up.


After his departure, the meeting ended in all harmony, and a resolution 
was passed with great enthusiasm that the conclusions come to as 
embodied in the foregoing resolutions should be engrossed and forwarded 
to the farmer’s wife and the head poulterer.


A rumor has reached us that while there were doubts as to the sauce to 
be used in the serving up, slow stewing was settled on as the least 
revolutionary form of cookery.

Neither US imperialism nor Russian imperialism is a "friend" of Rojava's 
revolutionaries.  Last year Putin gave Erdogan the green light to invade Afrin. 
 This year Trump gave Erdogan the green light to invade northeastern Syria.

Meanwhile European imperialism supplies Erdogan with weapons and equipment used 
in the invasion (e.g. leopard tanks made by Rheinmetall).

The people of northeastern Syria have no friends but the international

Comrades of GLW (Australia), you really don't need to appeal for support
for "Rojava’s revolutionaries". They have already so many "friends"! The
PYD/YPG is proud to collaborate with U.S. imperialism (General Kobane
just bragged about their collaboration with the CIA to hunt al-Bagdadi),
and Trump and the Pentagon wants now to let them guard and share the
profit of the oil fields in East Syria. (I am sure that the PYD/YPG will
be happy to serve Washington as oil field guardians!) In addition, they
are closely collaborating now with Russian imperialism and Assad,... how
many friends more do they need?!

There are many liberation movements around the world which have a lot
less powerful friends! One of them is, by the way, located in Northwest
Syria (as well as in the underground). In contrast to the PYD/YPG, they
are not on good terms with Russia, Assad as well as the U.S.

If you want to make yourselves useful (and if you still have some
shame), please support a real liberation movement and not such servants
of Trump, Putin and Assad!

So funny, when challenged about how her boss's housing plan would screw 
poor New Yorkers, De Blasio's Deputy Mayor for Housing and Development 
Alicia Glen (former head of Goldman Sach's Urban Investment Group) 
snarled, "We have certain tools in our municipal tool box. We can't 
change the history of capitalism and we're not Trotsky. You try to 
redistribute some of that growth to the people who need it."

Even before bulldozers cleared the way for cranes, bankers and planners 
had set out on a stealthier form of urban neighborhood clearance, which 
established the preconditions for gentrification. In 1934 New Deal 
legislation established the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) to 
standardize, regulate and insure home mortgages. Not everyone, however, 
could access these loans. Along with the FHA, the federal government 
empowered bankers and developers to lead the Home Owners' Loan 
Corporation (HOLC). HOLC was tasked with quantifying the risk bankers 
would take in giving loans to particular people in particular places. 
This would allow the federal government and the banks to agree on rates 
for FHA loan insurance. To make these decisions, HOLC sent surveyors out 
to every residential block in just about every city in the country; 
those surveyors would look at a neighborhood and grade it on a scale 
from A (very safe) to D (very unsafe).


There were three main criteria HOLC used to determine risk: 1) the age 
of the building stock; 2) the density of housing; and, by far most 
determinately, 3) the racial composition of residents. Jews were 
considered communistic and likely to go on rent strike. Italians were 
characterized as dangerous gangsters. African Americans were written off 
entirely, and virtually any block with any Black people was given a low 
grade. Following real estate industry "best practices," the FHA made 
segregation and suburbanization the United States' de facto housing 
policy. Over time, as property owners in Black, immigrant and racially 
mixed neighborhoods were shut out of the finance system, many of their 
buildings declined, rents fell and some landlords resorted to abandonment.

Against this background, our work has shown that the new accumulation 
regime that has emerged in Hungary since the 2008 world economic crisis 
is largely based on an authoritarian management of the contradiction 
between subsidizing capital and pushing the costs of social reproduction 
on the working masses. The management of the politically most active 
middle classes included an unstable mix of capitalizing the upper middle 
class (and using their savings for stabilizing oligarchic capital 
circuits), and the ideological targeting and selective subsidizing of 
downwardly mobile middle-class segments.


Beyond the use of administrative and redistributive tools, these efforts 
included repressive ideological and political means, which pulled the 
regime close to far right ideology, and political alliances with far 
right groups throughout Europe and beyond (most recently, engagement in 
Turkey’s war on the Kurds). Despite all coercive efforts, contradictions 
have grown so great even during economic upswings, that Orbán seems to 
lose some control over the political-ideological base upon which his 
regime was built.

MM's support for an attempt within the British Labour Party to prevent gay
and bisexual women and men is risible to the point of being downright
anti-gay.

There have been a series of violent threats against people organising the
new Lesbian Gay Bisexual Alliance and attempts to threaten the employment
of a leading member, a black lesbian lawyer.

These attacks come overwhelmingly from white heterosexual males.

As John Edmundson noted, the claims of 'transphobia' are used in the same
way claims of 'anti-semitism' are used by zionists to stop critical
thinking about Israel.  Homosexual and bisexual women and men have every
right to organise and also to have same-sex involvements.  Lesbians have
every right to say 'No' to penis and the attitudes of straight males
demanding entry to lesbian spaces and to break the 'cotton ceiling' are
downright rapey.

We've already seen this at work in the Yaniv case in Canada.

Happily there is now starting to be serious pushback against the New
Misogyny and the New Homophobia, complete with all its threats of rape,
murder, lynching, plus its super-active and super-asggressive
no-platforming of people ranging from Germaine Greer to Cindy Sheehan to
Helen Steel.
