[MCN-L] Sign up to host during the next Global Drinking About Museums event

2020-04-22 Thread Koven Smith
Hey, kids! Because the response to the last global all-day Drinking About
Museums event was so positive, we're doing one again on April 30th. We'll
start with virtual happy hours in New Zealand and 5pm local time and
gradually work our way across the globe, finally ending around 7pm Pacific
Time with meetups on the west coast.

We're looking for people to host virtual happy hours and will be holding
orientation sessions for new hosts *tomorrow* (April 23rd) if you're
interested. We're looking for folks interested in hosting (or just helping
out with) "local" events, accessible events, and non-alcoholic events. If
you're interested in helping out, please sign up at
https://www.drinkingaboutmuseums.com/page/volunteer/

As we start scheduling events in each time zone, you can find them at the
DAM events listing . Hope to
see you at one or more happy hours on the 30th!

Sincerely,
The Drinking About Museums Team

Re: [MCN-L] Is your Content Management System headless?

2019-11-03 Thread Koven Smith
Mark,

I haven't done any projects of the scale I suspect you're contemplating
using a headless CMS, but I have done a few smaller-scale projects using
Hugo with the Netlify and Forestry CMSes. Happy to talk about those, if
that would be helpful to you.

[MCN-L] Embedding LCD screens in new walls?

2013-09-16 Thread Koven Smith
I tend to agree with previous posters--heat is your biggest problem with a
recessed mount like that, and if you don't account for it, you'll need to
access the device(s) a lot more often. In the Greek and Roman galleries at
the Met, we built out casework that swung out for easy access, but allowed
for passive air flow from bottom to top. You can (kind of) see them in this
image: http://bit.ly/165xWS9. Touch screens take so much abuse that I think
you need to work from the assumption that you'll be accessing them all the
time, whether to update the software or change out hardware or whatever.
Good luck!

[MCN-L] Sharing Ideas

2013-09-13 Thread Koven Smith
I think Russ highlights the real problem--there are a lot of good software
solutions out there for this sort of approach (I've had good luck with
Yammer in the past as well, but Ning, BuddyPress, Google Sites, or [if you
love doing things the hard way] SharePoint are also workable solutions),
but the hard part is keeping any given solution alive once you've
implemented it.

It's pretty typical that you'll see a big spike in usage when you first
launch, and then a rapid fall-off in activity after that. So make sure that
you've got a good group of power users ahead of time who are committed to
continue using the solution for a period of time to keep it going even when
most of your users have forgotten about it. Those power users can continue
to add content and make sure that you have a developing critical mass of
reasons for users to come back to the solution you've implemented later.

I somehow didn't know about Commons In a Box. Thanks for that, Bob!

[MCN-L] Shop and ticketing

2013-02-08 Thread Koven Smith
Jonathan,

I can't be too specific about what we're looking to do yet, since this
background research will help us to determine that. What I want to get a
sense of right now is for those who do have integrated solutions, what
they're using and what the scope of effort is/was to both implement and
maintain same. DAMS integration is probably the most nebulous piece of this
for me, so I'm just curious to see who (if anyone) is actually doing that
so I can have some formal examples to refer to.

2013-02-06 Thread Koven Smith
Hey, MCN-ers! I'm looking for any concrete examples out there of museums
that have tightly integrated their ecommerce and ticketing solutions,
ideally with some sort of single-cart checkout, so that the end user is
able to buy tickets, memberships, and shop items with a single transaction.
Bonus points if you're also integrating the collections in some way (via
print-on-demand or other).

If you're one of these rarefied creatures, can you tell me a little about

[MCN-L] Blackbaud/Raiser's Edge API

2012-06-21 Thread Koven Smith
Hey, out there-does anyone have firsthand experience with using the Raiser's
Edge API? We're evaluating it for possible use here at DAM and would like to
talk to some satisfied customers (or unsatisfied, for that matter). You can
e-mail me off-list. Thanks!

Koven

[MCN-L] Job Posting: Data Architect at the Denver Art Museum

2012-05-16 Thread Koven Smith
Hey, kids-I'm hiring! Come wrangle some data with me at the Denver Art Museum.
You know you want to.

Data Architect - The Denver Art Museum
The Technology department at the Denver Art Museum is seeking a consultant for
a two-year contracted engagement to implement critical content systems and
wrangle a whole bunch of interesting data. An ideal candidate for the job will
have excellent communication skills and demonstrated experience with project
management and database administration. Experience working in/with non-profit
organizations like the Denver Art Museum is preferred, but not required.

Specific deliverables for the contract period include, but are not limited to:
* Implementation of new SQL-based collections management software: This
software is a key content repository for the Museum, and contains information
about every object in the Museum's collection. As part of this implementation,
the Data Architect will perform data mapping and migration, quality assurance,
data normalization, interface configuration, and some report writing.
* Implementation of Digital Asset Management (DAM) software: The Data
Architect will implement a new DAM system for the management of the Museum's
internal assets (images, videos, and sound files). Included in this
implementation will be some schema design and data mapping.
* Development of web services for loose data coupling: The Data Architect
will develop RESTful web services for the movement of data between multiple
business systems.
* Development of a data warehouse: If necessary, the Data Architect will
design and implement a data warehouse for optimized storage and retrieval of
data from multiple business systems.
* Management of assets for external and internal publication: The Data
Architect will work directly with primary stakeholders within the Museum to
manage the publication of assets to multiple platforms including
denverartmuseum.org, the Google Art Project, and DAM_SCOUT (the Museum's mobile
app). Holla.
Qualifications and experience:
* Project management experience (agile, waterfall--we're not picky)
* Business analysis experience (much of the job will involve translating
user needs into usable data design)
* Experience with relational database design, performance tuning, and
capacity planning
* Knowledge of RESTful web services
* Experience with report-writing tools such as Crystal or SSRS
* Experience with data normalization, and familiarity with common
normalization tools (we've been using Google Refine lately)
Interested applicants should e-mail a cover letter and resume to: hrcoordinator
at denverartmuseum.org In the
subject line of your email, please list your name first, followed by "Data
Architect."
