I'm looking for any concrete examples out there of museums that have tightly integrated their ecommerce and ticketing solutions, ideally with some sort of single-cart checkout, so that the end user is able to buy tickets, memberships, and shop items with a single transaction. Bonus points if you're also integrating the collections in some way (via print-on-demand or other). If you're one of these rarefied creatures, can you tell me a little about what software(z) you're using, and how the integration(z) work? Thanks in advance! Koven * * * * *Koven J. [MCN-L] Institutional website usage v. digital collections siteusage?
Dear Ellice, From the British Museum - traffic to the Research section of our website, where our Collection Online sits, and makes up the vast majority of the content) accounts for between 25 and 30% of our traffic by volume of pageviews. Best wishes, Matthew Head of Web, British Museum -Original Message- From: mcn-l-bounces at mcn.edu [mailto:mcn-l-boun...@mcn.edu] On Behalf Of Rich Barrett-Small Sent: 14 January 2013 10:25 To: mcn-l at mcn.edu Subject: Re: [MCN-L] Institutional website usage v. digital collections siteusage? Dear Ellice, In 2012, 17% of our total web visits included a trip to our collections site. Interestingly, a lot of these visits were exclusive to the collections site. In fact, only 3-4% of web visits include a trip to both our collections site and the other or main site. I think we too are serving a niche audience with our collections-there were around 74,000 different object pages viewed in the last month. I think Jeremy's approach, with better integration between the two properties and a unified design/user experience, clearly yields positive results and makes more sense to the user. It's something for which I am advocating here. I'm not so much interested in exact numbers as the ratio-e.g. your site overall gets five visits for every one visit your digital collections gets. As a follow-up, does anyone have goals/thoughts on what that ratio should ideally be, or are you happy wherever it currently falls? Many thanks! I don't know what experience other museums have had, but as far as I can tell having the collections integrated into our main site has worked better than when they were hived off in their own site. As for whether we're happy, well, yes and no. A pretty good proportion of users view these pages, but then again our collections comprise a huge number of pages and should serve the needs of a large number of people. The fact that last month people landed on about 42000 different item pages suggests that we're probably reaching people with some very niche needs, which is good. But I suspect that we're still only getting a tiny percentage of all those people with such niche interests so I can't be that satisfied. [MCN-L] Wikipedia and Cultural Organisations
Dear all, I'm working on a paper for the forthcoming GLAM-WIKI conference at the British Museum (http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM-WIKI http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM-WIKI ), and as part of it doing some research into the referrals that cultural websites get from Wikipedia. I'm keen to get some stats from UK and US cultural organisations, specifically the number of referrals they get from Wikipedia (all languages*) and the total number of visits for Sept 08, Sept 09 and Sept 10. It's not about creating a league table - more about seeing if there are huge variations across the sector in the percentage, and creating an aggregate percentage figure, and whether that has increased or otherwise over the last 3 years. I am intending to keep the actual figures anonymous (overall visits and the referrals), as that isn't really the point - but I may come back and ask for permission if there's a good reason to reveal the identity behind any outlier, for example. So, if you have access to your Museum's stats, and are willing to help my survey, I would love to hear from you off list - mcock at britishmuseum.org *Not just English - important. [MCN-L] British Museum website - new children's section and games
Collect facts and save the day - become an online Time Explorer with the British Museum Time Explorer is the new British Museum online game that invites brave souls to travel back in time to Aztec Mexico, Imperial China, Ancient Rome and Ancient Egypt, where dangers, puzzles and traps lie in wait. In this interactive adventure game, players become junior curators whose knowledge of the past, skill and courage are all needed when they're sent back in time to help the local population rescue a treasured object from certain destruction. Alongside four other new online games, Time Explorer forms part of the new British Museum website section for children: Young Explorers. The first phase is now live and will continue to grow, offering visitors aged 6-12 a chance to explore the collection and cultures, head behind the scenes for a look at what we get up to, and get creative with loads of new activities. For Young Explorers, visit http://www.britishmuseum.org/explore/young_explorers1.aspx For Time Explorer, visit http://www.britishmuseum.org/explore/young_explorers/play/time_explorer. aspx The Web team commissioned GR/DD to design and build the games, but it wouldn't have been possible (or we think so good) without a lot of input from curators across the Museum, our Schools and young audiences team and our own developers and the IS team for doing hidden wonders to get it on our site. We're still building up content, and ironing out a few things in the games, so do send us any comments. Or we'll simply see you on the scoreboard! [MCN-L] A History of the World
A History of the World, British Museum and BBC partnership At 9.45 the first programme in the series 'A History of the World in 100 Objects' goes out on BBC Radio 4. Already live is the 'A History of the World 'website at http://www.bbc.co.uk/ahistoryoftheworld From here you can listen again to the programmes (up to 2012 and likely beyond - no 7 days for AHOW), download the podcast, etc and find more about the objects featured. As well as the 100 objects from the British Museum, there are objects from over 350 museums around the UK on the site, to be joined by possibly '000s from public contribution. One feature of the site was not ready for launch, but you will shortly be able to comment on each object - whether a museum or public contribution. There are a number of ways to see objects from specific museums. For the British Museum 100, click on the Contributor button on the left of the Home/Explore page, select British Museum. Scroll through time and see the objects in the time tunnel. There are a few ways that you can filter to find objects from other Museums, via 'BBC Area' in the control panel on the left of Explore, or In Your Area http://www.bbc.co.uk/ahistoryoftheworld/inyourarea/ or using a map showing all of the UK museum partners http://www.bbc.co.uk/ahistoryoftheworld/about/map/ Some other things: There's a blog which will have posts right through the year, written by Paul Sargeant of the BBC and David Prudames of the BM, with contributions from many others who have helped make the programmes and the website. http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/ahistoryoftheworld/ There's a badge and a widget (with 'Today's Object' feed) to embed in your site/blog if you wish. http://www.bbc.co.uk/ahistoryoftheworld/get-involved/badges-widgets/ It's been an incredible editorial, technical and organisational tour-de-force to get this site to live - credit is due to teams in the BBC and museums across the UK.
