Re: [MCN-L] Job Opportunity: Sr. Web Developer Dallas Museum of Art

2018-09-29 Thread Somaya Langley
While not directly related to IT in Museums, I ran a survey (with my Cambridge
and Oxford colleagues about Digital Preservation staffing resources (amongst
other things).

People from the GLAM sector, universities and a few other disciplines responded.

There are questions about how big an organisation is, how many digital staff
they have (but not traditional IT roles of software developer/devOps/syd admin
etc), and how many digital preservation FTEs etc. So it might not exactly meet
your purposes... however the raw dataset is found at:
http://doi.org/10.17863/CAM.26222

So hopefully there is something there for you to inform strategy, even though
it’s not directly core-IT related.

Thanks
Somaya

Welcome!

The staff ratios topic has come up before, for sure. The list has a
searchable archives (link in the footer); I tried and it was a little
hard to narrow it down to that topic (it's hard to avoid job postings)
but search phrases like "staff survey" and "digital budget" get me some
related posts.

Does anybody remember who has raised this topic previously? That would help.

Best,
Matt

Re: [MCN-L] preservation photography of 3D objects

2018-07-18 Thread Somaya Langley
Hi Marielle,

Over the past couple of years, colleagues from several of my workplaces have
asked questions about preserving 3D software files. So there are definitely 3D
digitisation experiments happening in several places including my current
organisation (Cambridge University Library), the State Library New South Wales
(Sydney, Australia), the Church History Library (USA) and I think the Getty and
the Smithsonian from memory.

As far as I’m aware, there aren’t guidelines for digitisation of objects in 3D
file formats (and given the international guidelines around born-digital video
are only in development currently, I suspect that it will take a few more years
for guidelines around 3D file formats - as in-depth research is needed).

I’m sure a range of other orgs have their own guidelines for digitising objects
in 2D formats (I’m not necessarily the best person to advise on this). The
information I’ve given to my colleagues who are experimenting with 3D formats,
was to select a format that was already known by the PRONOM file format
registry (developed and run by The National Archives in the UK).

These 3D file formats (that are already known by PRONOM) are:
* X3D - fmt/579, fmt/580, fmt/581, fmt/582
* PLY - fmt/831
* STL - x-fmt/108, fmt/865

Our advice to our digitisation colleagues leant towards X3D, as it's an ISO
standard - and also as it’s XML based.

An example of a collection item at my current workplace is this object that has
been digitised in 3D:
https://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/view/MS-ORCS-1-1/1

The 3D image has been made available via SketchFab:

Thanks

[MCN-L] Digital Preservation Survey on Maturity, Strategy and Staffing Resources

2018-05-04 Thread Somaya Langley
Hi MCN List Members,

The Digital Preservation Oxford and Cambridge (DPOC) project in collaboration
with the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) has developed a short survey
intended to gather information from collecting and research organisations
around the world who have a remit to manage digital content. The survey has a
particular focus on staffing resources, but also briefly covers policy,
strategy, and maturity modelling. We would very much like to receive some
responses from those working in the museum and gallery sectors.

We are aware that concrete information for benchmarking institutions against
their peers - particularly in regards to maturity and staffing resources - is
required by those looking to make the case for digital preservation within
their organisations. We are interested in obtaining figures from institutions
around the world, regardless of an institution’s size or whether any digital
preservation effort has already commenced. We are particularly keen to obtain
information from institutions based outside of the USA.

We would be very grateful if you would take the time to fill out our survey:
https://cambridge.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_brWr12R8hMwfIOh

The survey should take between 10-20 minutes to complete. Deadline for survey
responses is: 31 May 2018
(Though we would very much appreciate input earlier than this date.)

Further information can be found at:
http://www.dpoc.ac.uk/2018/04/23/maturity-and-resourcing-survey/
Anonymised raw data will be shared via the DPOC website for all in the digital
preservation community to use, in August 2018: http://www.dpoc.ac.uk/
Any questions about the survey can be directed to:
digitalpreservat...@lib.cam.ac.uk<mailto:digitalpreservat...@lib.cam.ac.uk?subject=Maturity%20level%20survey>

Apologies for cross-postings.

Many thanks

Somaya

Re: [MCN-L] Tate contact urgently needed

2018-04-04 Thread Somaya Langley
Hi Susan,

I've passed this onto someone I know in digital conservation area at the TATE.
I've asked her to pass on your email to their web team.

Thanks
