We've lately been using Strapi (https://strapi.io/) to build out a
repository to capture collections-related content not already stored in our
CMS (Drupal 7) or TMS. Some benefits are that 1.) We're able to lean on the
built-in API of the headless CMS to readily deliver that information

We recently developed an in gallery exhibit for the Museums maritime archelogy
collection using a Drupal 8 + Gatsby JS + Reactive Search set up. The database
has around 16k objects with ~20 variable fields on each object and multiple
object images that can be over 50MB. I think

We're not using a headless CMS in production yet, but I am working on a
prototype for one that will manage in-gallery digital signage and
interactive displays (using Drupal 8 and Gatsby). I'm still in the
beginning stages of the project but I'm happy to share my findings with you.

I haven't done any projects of the scale I suspect you're contemplating
using a headless CMS, but I have done a few smaller-scale projects using
Hugo with the Netlify and Forestry CMSes. Happy to talk about those, if
that would be helpful to you.
