[MCN-L] [DM SIG:]2013 MCN Presentations from DMSIG - Call for submissions!
Just a reminder, MCN proposals are due today! http://wired.ivvy.com/event/MCN13/abstract/request If you are going to submit a proposal and want it to be sponsored by the Digital Media SIG, email me the title of your proposal and Ill send an email at the beginning of the day on Thursday 5/16. From what Ive been told, being sponsored will not guarantee acceptance, but it will help and will ensure that all DM SIG sponsored talks are not scheduled at the same time, pulling our group into several factions? Thanks to everyone who is pitching a presentation, or considering it! We are smack in the middle of the submission period for MCN 2013. http://wired.ivvy.com/event/MCN13/abstract/request - closing 5/15 After last year, one of the resounding pieces of feedback was that there werent enough (any) photography/imaging topics at the conference. If we want to see more of these topics, WE have to propose them. As DM SIG chair, Im happy to facilitate or help in any way but we all need to step up and pitch some presentations. Below are some suggestions - lets get some conversations going. Chris and all, A panel on FADGI and Metamorfoze sounds really great. Also, the open-access technical infrastructure session I'm organizing (Optimizing Open Access Image Delivery) will definitely be submitted, and it may prove to be a good fit for the DM SIG's seal of approval. Riffing on items 2 and 3 in your list, I'd bet a session combining the topics of conservation and multispectral imaging would be a big hit. Hi, Regarding the conversation on next year's session on preservation strategies. A couple ideas: - I'd be willing to participate, maybe to give information on the resources available for digital preservation through our LC program - We also have a digital preservation partnership program called the NDSA, so maybe I could talk to one of our museum partners to see if they might want to present on their experiences. And, any other museums are welcome to join NDSA to start collaborating there: (http://www.digitalpreservation.gov/ndsa/ ) Let me know if any of this is of interest - Sue Manus NDIIPP/Library of Congress http://www.digitalpreservation.gov/

Thank you, Susan! Ive been keeping track of all the proposed talks and since you and Chuck Patch have both expressed interest in this particular topic, maybe we three should have a further conversation off line. Hi all, Great ideas. I'd also love to see a session on the procedures and the underlying technical means by which certain museums are providing Open Access images to end users. This would be focused more on the nuts and bolts (from infrastructure to user experience) of image delivery than on image production or management, but it sure would be interesting. A key aim could be to learn how some Open Access image providers are balancing optimally efficient delivery (minimizing both friction for users and allocated internal staff time) with the capture of meaningful use metrics (i.e., anything more than a raw log of image downloads). Having floated this, maybe I should organize a session proposal Rob Rob Lancefield Manager of Museum Information Services / Registrar of Collections Davison Art Center, Wesleyan University 301 High Street, Middletown CT 06459-0487 USA rlancefield [at] wesleyan [dot] edu | tel. 860.685.2965 On 11/13/2012 2:58 PM, Jana Hill wrote: Hi Chris et al., In addition to those ideas, DM SIG table #2 at the luncheon was very interested in seeing some presentations on digital preservation strategies for both still and moving images. We had a really good time. However One of the largest issues I had with the conference this year was the total lack of presentations on imaging. This clearly puts the ball in our court and Id like to have us as a group come up with several proposals to submit for next years conference. Since we are all extremely busy, it is entirely appropriate to begin these discussions now. As chair of the Digital Media SIG I will do my part in officially underwriting proposals emanating from this group to aid in their acceptance. A few back of the envelope ideas that were tossed around at the conference for topics for next year were: 3D Imaging, Partnering with Conservation for imaging (which would be a good way to draw more conservation talks into the mix), and a panel discussion by institutions doing multi/hyper spectral imaging. These are by no means exhaustive as a list of possible topics but rather a way to get the conversation started. Please reply to this thread with any other ideas you may have and Id like to get some of them pinned down and get them pitched for the conference. If you need any incentives, the conference next year will be in Montreal, home of poutine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poutine and Molson. I look forward to good presentations on digitization and artery hardening fare! Chris and all, Great! Now I'm even sorrier I had to miss your session (I was speaking in another room). Also, based on the print program's short abstract, I had mistakenly thought you would be focusing on policy and stakeholder buy-in, not on delivery implementation. It's good to know that the Open Access implementation topic actually did surface as well in Seattle. Chris (and John and Melissa), your Yale team was also on my shortlist of people to tap for a cross-institutional session proposal with this different targeted subtopic next year. Let's talk offlist about this! cheers, Rob On 11/15/2012 10:58 AM, Edwards, Chris wrote: Funny, this is almost EXACTLY what John ffrench (Yale University Art Gallery), Melissa Fournier (Yale Center for British Art) and I presented on this year at MCN. http://www.mcn.edu/opening-access-works-public-domain-yale-university Chris.

I'd be willing to pull together a session on preservation strategies. I'm hardly an expert, but there's a year to do it and it's an area that interests me. Also, although not in the realm of digital imaging, I'd like to see audio preservation added to the mix. Not quite sure of the title - but I would add something like Emergent [or experimental] Media. During the closing of MCN2012, we broke out into mini groups and discussed a few topics. One of the topic areas that I sat in on was Emerging Hardware (think 3D Printing and Augmented Reality). See wiki for discussion : http://www.mcn.edu/3d-printing-and-emerging-hardware Personally, I'd like to see a discussion around RD of FabLab (fabircation lab) type spaces in museums, centered around the question How can museums facilitate innovation? I did a brief presentation re: networks (presentation here : https://www.dropbox.com/s/plf2myrziaktxkf/artsTech-mcn2012.pdf) that touched on this idea, but there's more room for discussion. When Facebook and Twitter were first emerging as viable communication channels, we were seeing a good deal of innovation in how we were communicating with the public. Here's an event we did in 2010 that looked at how artists are using social media to create new work : http://www.arrowrootmedia.com/2010/02/02/social-media-week-nyc-2010/ I'm curious how this practice of innovation can continue in our community and beyond. web: http://arrowrootmedia.com cell: 646-339-9410 On Thu, Nov 15, 2012 at 9:53 AM, Edwards, Chris chris.edwards at yale.eduwrote: Thanks for everyone's interest! Hi All, It's so exciting that you are already working on next year's topics! Dale Kronkright and Megan Jacobs did an excellent session this year on capturing one-to-one 3D imaging that can be used for research (as opposed to the 123D Catch quick approximations.) Dale showed how this is being used to monitor shifts and changes in the Georgia O'Keeffe Abiquiu home. They also walked us through RTI capturing techniques using pretty accessible equipment. Looking at the topics below, it might be good to keep them in the loop.
