Re: [MCN-L] Expression Engine

2018-09-20 Thread Dana Allen-Greil
Just chiming in here as a user of both WordPress and Drupal.

The U.S. National Archives uses Drupal as our preferred CMS and we have
about 9 websites running on it (3 in Drupal 8 and the rest in Drupal 7).
The benefits of Drupal for us are:

   - Open source software that does not require licensing fees
   - Easy (and relatively affordable) to contract help with implementation
   and development
   - Very robust and flexible core product with thousands of contributed
modules and an active open source development community
   - It is becoming fairly standard in government, so there are a lot of
shared needs for features that we can co-develop or share openly with other
   agencies
   - Because security is so important to government users, we have found it
easier to keep Drupal secure / patched than other systems (in particular,
WordPress presents problems on this front).

I will say that, out of the box, Drupal's interface for content editors is
not the simplest and most intuitive (this has definitely improved with D8).
However, this can be addressed through theming, contributed modules, and
in-line help.

I am personally a huge fan of WordPress because it is easy for me to do
what I want. At the National Archives, we continue to use WordPress for our
16 blogs, because it is very simple for content editors to manage. However,
we did recently move from self-hosted WordPress to paying for WordPress.com
hosting and this was largely due to the fact that WP requires constant
upgrades and patching to keep secure. Our WP sites (blogs) are not highly
customized so this solution made more sense for us in terms of workload and
cost. Once you start customizing your self-hosted WP sites and using lots
of plugins, the patching and upgrade issue mentioned above becomes more
problematic.

I'm happy to answer any and all questions about Drupal or WP at an
institution like ours!

Good luck with your selection.

Dana

Re: [MCN-L] Expression Engine

2018-09-17 Thread Susan Edwards
Hi all and Robin -
Sorry for the late reply - I have been researching CMSs for our website
this year. I agree with Sina and others about Wordpress, that it's a great
solution for *most* museums. You'll want to look closely at the scope and
functionality of the site to help assess. WP is great for typical/common
functionality, where others have solved the problem for you and you can
benefit from the community's knowledge. Because our website is quite
complex, with academic digital publishing features, and complex events
management, we are still evaluating whether WP is viable and it seems like
it is probably too limiting for what we need. So we are looking closely at
both WP and October. October is built on the same framework as Craft,
called Laravel.

Re: [MCN-L] Expression Engine

2018-09-14 Thread Sina Bahram
My $0.02. WordPress now powers around 30% of all sites on the entire web. It
has thousands upon thousands of contributions from hundreds to thousands of
developers, and it's essentially as close to "easy" as possible to hire someone
with experience, either technically as a developer or content-wise as a
contributor, to WordPress. It also has pretty solid accessibility out of the
box, something that I'm of course passionate about.

Having said that, it's hardly perfect; therefore, is there something specific
that WP doesn't do that you're looking for another platform to do for you?

Take care,
Sina

Hi Robin,

have recommended EE as a solid contender for a web CMS but the company
behind the product seems to have lost a lot of momentum and many developers

Have you heard of Craft CMS <https://craftcms.com/>? It is a newer CMS that
picks up where EE left off - it's fast, robust, and actively developed. It
incorporates flexible content management with a solid plugin ecosystem,
including a commerce module and API support. We've been using it for most
of our projects over the last year or two and have had a lot of success
with it.

Happy to answer any additional questions!
