The only viable part of checking the trans fluid while cold is knowing
that there is enough fluid in the pan to keep things reasonably
lubricated. I'm sure Mercedes has a specific reason for the outlined
procedure.

Was just out running my 95 E300 a bit and notice quite a good fuel leak
from the IP area. Hard to tell where its coming from because the
manifold is in the way. Looks like its coming from the IP itself so its
probably the delivery valve seals maybe? What are the common fuel leaks
on these

Probably loose at the crack and piling up. You must maintain
significant tension on both ends of the chain all the time. You may
also need to pull the tensioner rail.
I'd try pulling firmly on both ends and walking it back and forth to

So the Coverlay dash cap is now glued on, as is a strip
of velvet to replace the sun-rotted sewn-on piece at the
leading edge of the dash. Should be ready to reinstall
tomorrow, if I actually get to it. Will make quite a
change, after the 1.5 years driving without a dashboard.
