wears too short- usually from removing it and re-installing in the

Now that I have the nut cut off the old alternator, I see there wasn't a
keyway in the shaft, but all the parts that make up the pulley have slots
for keys. Also, the new alternator shaft is milled for a key.
Should I get a key and put it in? if so, how do I know what size key to
get?

I had an 84 coupe that was owned by the son of the MBUSA parts distribution
center manager in Jersey. I paid a lot of the car, but it was totally tricked
out with OEM goodies.
Since it was an 84 it had a decent tranny in it, and with the turbo set up it
would take off the line quite well.

cartridge, brand new, and the other was either a cartridge or total
replacement (not my car). All three whined enough to notice. Good
air filters and associated plumbing on all three. I figured it was
normal.

The POS 300E has been leaking transmission fluid for a while, enough
to leave a good-sized spot when it's parked overnight, so I took it to
the coin-op carwash last weekend and gave the underside a good
blasting. Before I could drive it there, I had to put in a couple of
quarts of ATF, but that
