It's permissible for the needle to drop when the oil is hot, but I don't think it did when the cars were brand new and the bearings were tight. On my 1979 300SD (~300,000 miles) 2 bar at hot idle with 15W40 was a pretty reliable indicator that it needed an oil change. Mitch.
