[MBZ] '87 300SDL front wheel hubs

I have a question for the experts; what is the small brass insert on the end of the front wheel hubs on my '87 300SDL? It seems to have a spring effect and goes up against the wheel bearing cup. Never noticed them before and can't figure out what it is for. Thanks. Ralph '84 300CD '87
