So...an update. It seems that my 1980 300SD has a "simplified, early version"
vacuum setup for that model year. I have the 1980 MB service manual and the
vacuum diagram does NOT match. I spoke with Mark again at Sun Valley and he

Searching on "Differential" is not productive, the industry term is "rear axle
carrier".
When I had to replace one, local independent Mercedes specialist took one from

Then car-part.com will turn up some LCAs. They may not be listed
separately, but if not, look for differential or rear axle, then call
the yards with the cheaper Diff's and ask for the LCAs. There is a
yard that is maybe 120 miles from me that had some 123s.
