Curt, The car had a sticker from some quick lube place. I would bet that the oil wasn't synthetic or anything close to the 507.00 spec. The "CHANGE OIL NOW" message came on 200 miles into the trip home to Oregon. Beetle juice will be getting top notch care from now on. Kevin in Hillsboro, OR

I believe military issue in the mid sixties was Hamilton, but if not probably a Bulova, both top manufactures in the US. I suspect also autowind models rather than electronic or electric due to sealing issues and humidity in Viet Nam, although that would account for failures in the jungle.
