The ring gear pickup L3 sits between pin 20- ws and pin 3- br/ge of
N39 the EDS control unit.
The output from pin 25 gn/sw goes to the test skt X29/4 then to N6
(Klima) pin 2 gn/sw and via X26 gn/ge to the instrument cluster A1
P7 marked TD (no pin number indicated).
Confused yet.

Hmm I've never heard of the tach itself dying, but after 29yrs,
anything is possible. Congrats! You got the odd one!
Twice, for me. Fixed them both. Bad electrolytic capacitor in
the last one.

The tach signal goes into the EDS computer (main engine computer) and gets
split out from there to the cluster and the KLIMA and maybe other
consumers. I think there is some amplification in the EDS computer, I
don't know if there is any other processing. Do you have a wiring
diagram? I bought

I have a couple of spare Klimas, so I can try swapping them and the

Also tried direct ground on the cluster with no effect. OVP relays,

Curly.
My '87 TD had an intermittent Tach which then died.
It turned out to be the small ground wire(s), under the large main
ground wire bolted to the shock mount, were broken off. On my TD the
shock mount was coming adrift at the seams, thus fatigued the wires
that eventually failed.
YMMV.
