wipers only work on high - and stop where ever you turn them off.
The 450 SL had that problem, turns out somebody had kicked
the relay in half, it's over the gas pedal on that car.
A little glue and solder and it was good as new.

Don't have to remove the steering wheel, there are screws at the base of the
stalk, but fishing the connector out and back in again is a pain. Once you get
the multi-pin connector loose (underside of dash, remove kick panel), tie a
string or wire to it before you pull the stalk off and the wire
Sounds like the stalk (aka multi-switch). It can probably be fixed with an
electronics cleaning spray like Deoxit. You don't need to remove it, but the
job is easier if you do. The end of the stalk is a cap that can be pried off
carefully (so you don't mar the plastic) and then it comes apart
