I agree with the factory. I am not as familiar with the 187, but there
were definitely S models with the same distinction then as now. S has had
two concurrent meanings of years in reference to MB models.
S as in Sport 300SL, 190SL, SLK 230, 170S
S as in Super 220S, 220Sa, 220Sb, 300SE
