While not strictly necessary, I find that a POR-15 repair lasts longer if the rust is completely removed with multiple applications of naval jelly. Over a period of 1-2 days, the rust can be completely dissolved giving you a nice rust free, pickled surface which is optimal for POR-15 adhesion.

When I do the wipe-on poly I do the sanding between the final few coats, maybe 400 wet sanded with thinner to get the nibs out, then an extremely thinned coat for the last. Maybe 40% varnish the rest thinner. It fills the tiny remaining scratches. On that final coat after it dries a day or two

I wonder if the catalyzed finish like Bona floor stuff would work.  Water-based, thin, you mix in a second part, wipe it on, it self levels, then in a coupla hours it is fairly hard.  Not sure if it comes in a gloss or if it would just run off some curvy wood pieces.  Kinda pricey for a gallon
