I am planning to flush and refill coolant in my W116. I have a new
thermostat and would like to force the old one open to ensure that as
much of the old coolant is removed as possible. What is the best way to
force it into the open position (and hold it there)?

Someone on the list, or possibly STD, used a strip of brass from a casing to
hold their t-stat open.

Not really necessary, as the coolant will disappear when you drain the
block.
Whilst the block and radiator are draining, change the thermostat.
The M103 motor is a pain to change the coolant in, as it traps air up
the top and there is a special plug at the top of the head to let the
air out.

Huh? Not the coolant in the radiator if the thermostat is closed, surely.

Unless I miss something, I would open any orfice in the biest, including
T-stat housing, stick the garden hose in any end and flush.
BTW that's how I found the culprit not having heat. PO put a spark plug in
the line from the bypass to the heater core.

Well I like to give people some credit and surmise that the radiator
will be drained as well, during the process.
Behr radiators have a special set up for this, however if the radiator
is to be flushed I recommend hose removal.
Hendrik
who drains the radiators when changing coolant
Alex
As I said. Open all orfices i.e take hoses off and flush.
Hans
who did it in desperation.
Why not?

Unless you want to keep the old one as a spare, I thought the

I thought this would be similar to running without a thermostat?

Why would using a forced open Tatar be any different that just running

Correct. Bypassing the3 radiator when cool warms the engine faster - getting
it up to operating temp as soon as possble, also providing cabin heat faster
than most other cars, IMHO.

Doc Booth said to use a .38 Special shell casing to hold it open..
Or you can get Rusty to order you the Official one from Mom Benz.

I presume you mean t-stat, or thermostat. *smiles*
On an OM61x engine, the thermostat is actually a pair of valves.
When it operates, the bypass vvalve closes and the radiator
valve opens.
